Patriots Hit Four Home Runs, Power Past Mount St. Mary's

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Patriots collected 19 hits and belted four home runs in a 16-3 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at Straw Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Md.

THE LEADOFF
  • Junior center fielder James Quinn-Irons had four hits including two home runs and drove in five runs.
  • Freshman designated hitter Andrew Raymond had three hits including his fifth home run of the season.
  • Graduate student first baseman Jonny Wall finished with four hits, one RBI and scored two runs.
  • Freshman left fielder Lucas Alberti hit a three-run home run.
  • Freshman Tripp Capers recorded his first collegiate hit with a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning.
  • Every player in the starting lineup reached base at least once and five players scored at least two runs.
  • The Patriots have won 10 of their last 12 games.
George Mason (27-14, 12-6 A-10) threatened in the top on the first against Mount St. Mary's (15-24, 8-10 MAAC) senior starter Jake Andrews.  The Patriots loaded the bases with a leadoff single by junior shortstop Owen Clyne, a one-out walk by Quinn-Irons and a two-out walk by Raymond.  Andrews was able to escape the jam with a strikeout to end the inning.

With one out in the bottom of the first, Mount St. Mary's loaded the bases against Patriots freshman starter Michael Madigan with a double and two walks.  Mountaineers graduate student first baseman Logan Yi forced in a run with the third straight walk of the inning.  Madigan limited the damage with back-to-back fly outs to end the inning.

Mount St. Mary's sophomore third baseman Ty Fredo hit a two-out, two-run home run in the home half of the second off George Mason freshman Michael Bilo to make the score 3-0.

George Mason scored 16 unanswered runs the rest of the game.

In the top of the third, the Patriots used the long ball to take the lead against Mountaineers sophomore reliever Dominic Capperella.  With two outs, Quinn-Irons hit his 11th home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field fence to put the Patriots on the board.  After singles by sophomore third baseman Jake Butler and Raymond, Alberti belted a three-run home run over the right field fence to vault the Patriots in front, 4-3.

In the top of the fourth, Wall and Clyne began the inning with singles against Mount St. Mary's junior Brandon Rice.  Hull then knocked in two runs with a double off the wall in center field to increase the lead to 6-3.

Hull stole third and Quinn-Irons drove in a run with a base hit to left field to make it 7-3.  Quinn-Irons stole his 20th base of the season and scored on a ground out by Raymond for the eighth run of the game.

The Patriots put together a two-out rally in the top of the fifth against Mountaineers junior reliever Brandon Rice.  Wall and Clyne singled and Hull drew a walk to load the bases.  Quinn-Irons knocked in two runs with a single through the right side and Hull stole home to extend the lead to 11-3.

In the top of the sixth, Raymond led off with a single and sophomore second baseman Toby Hueber drew a one-out walk against Mount St. Mary's junior Danny Salisbury.  Junior catcher Garrett Pancione drove in a run with a double, Wall knocked in a run with a single and Pancione stole home to make it 14-3.

The Patriots hit two home runs in an inning for the second time in the game in the top of the seventh. 

Quinn-Irons led off with a shot over the right field fence for his 12th home run of the season and with one out, Raymond smashed his fifth home run of the year, a solo blast to right-center to account for the 16-3 final score.

For the Patriots, Madigan allowed one run on one hit in 1.0 inning of work.  Bilo gave up two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings.  Sophomore Logan Rumberg scattered three hits and tossed 3.0 scoreless innings.  Graduate student Ryan Ament pitched 1.1 hitless innings.  Sophomore Shaun Okeeffe retired two of the three batters he faced in the eighth inning.  Freshman Jake Drumm retired the side in order in the ninth.

For the Mountaineers, Andrews tossed two-innings of one-hit ball.  Capperella allowed four runs on four hits in 1.0 inning.  Rice surrendered seven runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings.  Salisbury was charged with five runs on five hits in 2.0 innings.

Quinn-Irons went 4-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI and scored three runs.  Raymond was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.  Wall finished 4-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.  Clyne went 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs.

The Patriots return home for a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Rhode Island beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
