TYSONS, Va. – George Mason freshman Lucas Alberti hit his first collegiate home run in the Patriots 7-5 win over Towson on Sunday afternoon at the DMV Classic held at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.

The Patriots extended their winning streak to nine games and have outscored opponents by a combined 122-38.  It's the longest winning streak for the Patriots since a 10-game streak March 6-18, 2009.

THE LEADOFF
  • Alberti hit a two-run home run, walked twice and scored two runs.
  • Senior Britt Yount retired the Tigers in order in the ninth to notch his second save of the weekend.
  • Sophomore center fielder James Quinn-Irons had a multi-hit game with his sixth home run.
  • Junior shortstop Owen Clyne had two hits and drove in two runs.
  • Junior catcher Garrett Pancione doubled in the fifth for his first hit as a Patriot.
  • The Patriots hit at least two home runs in the same game for the fourth time.
Towson (4-11) took the lead against George Mason (11-4) junior starter Brandon Cassedy in the bottom of the first.  Tigers senior shortstop Jordan Peyton led off the inning with a single and scored on a two-out base hit to put Towson in front, 1-0.

In the top of the fourth, Quinn-Irons led off the inning with his sixth home run of the season off Tigers junior starter Dutch DeProspero, a towering shot over the right field fence to tie the game.

The Tigers put runners on first and second with a pair of singles in the bottom of the inning and went back in front, 2-1, on a RBI-single by Peyton.

Towson made a pitching change for the fifth inning with senior Brett Seils taking over on the mound.  Pancione greeted the new pitcher with a double to the gap in left-center and junior right fielder Drew Canody moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt.  Alberti stepped in and belted his first NCAA home run over the left-center field fence to vault the Patriots into the lead for good at 3-2.

The Patriots sent nine batters to the plate in the seventh and scored four two-out runs on three hits against Seils and Tigers senior reliever Matt Leikus.

Alberti walked, sophomore designated hitter Owen Hull singled and Quinn-Irons was walked intentionally to load the bases.  Sophomore third baseman Jake Butler then ripped a two-run single to left field to make the score 5-2.  Butler drove in 10 runs over three games this weekend at Capital One Park.

After sophomore second baseman Toby Hueber was hit by a pitch to put a Patriot at every base again, Clyne knocked in a pair of runs with a single through the right side to pad the lead to 7-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, Towson sent eight batters to the plate and scored three runs on five singles against George Mason freshman Jake Drumm and sophomore Shaun Okeeffe to trim the lead to 7-5.

Facing the middle of the Tigers order, Yount posted a three-up and three-down bottom of the ninth.

For the Patriots, Cassedy allowed two runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings.  Drumm (3-0) was charged with three runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings and earned the win.  Yount notched his second save in three days.

For the Tigers, DeProspero allowed one run on two hits in 4.0 innings.  Seils (0-2) surrendered six runs on five hits in 2.2 innings and took the loss.

Quinn-Irons went 2-for-3 with a home run, two walks and two runs scored.  Clyne was 2-for-5 with two RBI.  Alberti reached base three times with a two-run home run and two walks.

The Patriots are on the road for two games at Duke, facing the Blue Devils on Tuesday (3 p.m.) and Wednesday (12 p.m.) in Durham, N.C.
