FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team swept a doubleheader against Dayton, 8-0 and 11-5, on Saturday at Spuhler Field.
THE LEADOFF
- The Patriots won two-of-three games in the series.
- Graduate student starter Connor O'Hara tossed a complete-game five-hitter in game one.
- Sophomore third baseman Jake Butler had six hits, five RBI and three runs scored in the two games.
- Sophomore right fielder Owen Hull had five hits and scored five runs in the two games.
- In game two, every player in the George Mason lineup reached base at least once and seven players had a multi-hit game.
GAME ONE
George Mason (12-7, 1-1 A10) took the lead against Dayton junior starter Peyton Malecha (9-11, 1-1 A10) in the bottom of the second. Butler began the inning when he reached on a throwing error, going all the way to second on the play. With two outs, junior shortstop
Owen Clyne singled through the right side, with Butler rumbling home to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
In the second, graduate student first baseman
Jonny Wall was hit by a pitch and with one out, Hull dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move him into scoring position. After junior center fielder
James Quinn-Irons was hit by a pitch, Butler delivered with a RBI-single to left field to make it 2-0.
The Patriots broke the game open in the home half of the seventh when they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs against three Flyers relievers. The first seven batters of the inning all reached base.
Sophomore second baseman
Toby Hueber was hit by a pitch while Hull and Quinn-Irons followed with singles to load the bases. Butler drove in a run with a single to center, freshman catcher
Andrew Raymond forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch and Alberti and Clyne each forced in a run with a walk to increase the lead to 6-0.
The Patriots tacked on two more runs in the eighth. Hueber led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hull then walked to put a pair of runners on base. With one out, Butler plated his third run of the game with a double to the gap in left-center. Raymond then knocked in a run with a groundout to pad the advantage to 8-0.
For the Patriots, O'Hara (2-1) scattered five singles and recorded his second complete game of the season. He struck out six with just one walk and faced only 33 batters in the game. O'Hara didn't allow more than one baserunner in eight of the nine innings.
For the Flyers, Malecha (0-2) allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in 5.0 innings and took the loss. Dayton used six pitchers in the game.
Butler went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Clyne went 1-for-2 with a walk and drove in two runs. Raymond reached base twice and finished with two RBI.
GAME TWO
George Mason (13-7, 2-1 A10) took the lead against Dayton junior starter J.J. Gatti (9-12, 1-2 A10) in the bottom of the first. Hueber and Hull started the inning with back-to-back singles. Hueber then moved to third on a wild pitch and Hull stole second. With two out and the bases loaded after a walk to Raymond, both Hueber and Hull scrambled home on a failed pickoff attempt to put the Patriots in front, 2-0.
In the second, the Patriots sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs on four hits to increase the lead to 6-0. Butler drove in a pair of runs with a single, Hueber had a RBI-single and Raymond plated a run with a sacrifice fly.
Dayton scored a pair of runs off Patriots junior starter
Brandon Cassedy in the top of the third. After a pair of walks to start the inning, Flyers sophomore center fielder Michael DiMartini drove in a run with a single and freshman third baseman Rylan Lujo plated another with a sacrifice fly.
Clyne led off the bottom of the third with a double and with one out, Wall singled in a run to make it 7-2. The Patriots loaded the bases and scored a pair of runs on a throwing error to increase the lead to 9-2.
In the home half of the fourth, Bulter led off with a double and Raymond and freshman left fielder
Lucas Alberti each walked to load the bases. Clyne grounded out Butler scoring on the play and graduate student designated hitter
Sam Lavin knocked in a run with a single to right to make the score 11-2.
Dayton scored single runs in the fifth, eighth and ninth inning for the 11-5 final score.
For the Patriots, Cassedy (2-0) allowed three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings to earn the win. He struck out six and walked two. Senior
Britt Yount tossed 2.0 innings of one-hit ball. Sophomore
Cole Egan gave up two runs on two hits in 2.0 innings.
For the Flyers, Gatti (1-3) surrendered eight runs, six earned, on eight hits in 2.1 innings. Dayton used four pitchers in the game.
Hull went 4-for-5 and scored three runs. Hueber finished 2-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Butler was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and one run scored.
The Patriots wrap up their four game homestand against Towson on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
