Patriots Earn 12th Win of the Season; Most Team Wins since 2007-08

Fairfax – The Patriots earned bonus point matches from the middleweights to propel George Mason (12-5) to a 24-18 win against the Brown Bears (1-8) in a non-conference match inside the RAC this afternoon.

George Mason improves to 12-5, the most wins in a season since the 2007-08 team finished 13-5. The Patriots eclipse the 11-win seasons the past two years. 

The teams split the first two lightweight matches before Brown took a 9-3 lead with a fall at 141 pounds. Redshirt junior Ben Monn (125) won by 6-0 decision to improve to 14-10 at 125.

George Mason took control of the match with three straight bonus point matches between 149 and 165. Kaden Cassidy won by major decision, 12-0, to improve to 13-3. Redshirt sophomore DJ McGee earned his fourth technical fall this season with a 17-2 (5:38) win in the 157-pound weight class.

In the top 10 of all of NCAA Division I Wrestling in bonus points, Evan Maag recorded his eighth pin of the season at 165 pounds.  Maag took charge with an early takedown before pinning Brown's Keegan Rothrock.

The Patriots lead was cut to 18-12 after Brown edged closer with a decision at 174.

In the featured nationally-ranked bout at 184, #25 Malachi DuVall earned a 7-3 decision against Brown's #27Andrew Reall. DuVall was down a point after two periods, 2-3, but took the lead with a takedown just into the third period and earned a riding time point.

Tyler Kocak (197) secured the match with a sudden-victory win against Brown's Thomas Sandoval. Kocak won the riding point time in the 2-1 decision.
 With the win, the George Mason Patriots even the all-time series with the Bears. The Patriots have now won two straight against Brown.

The Patriots Alumni Day and Senior Day will be next Sunday, Feb. 16 against American at 6 p.m.
