DAVIDSON, N.C. – The George Mason women's basketball team fought hard but couldn't overcome a cold shooting night, dropping a 66-50 decision to Davidson on Thursday night at John M. Belk Arena. The Patriots (23-4, 13-3 A-10) showed resilience throughout the contest but were unable to capitalize on key opportunities against a hot-shooting Wildcats team (16-11, 11-4 A-10).
George Mason came out strong, with
Nekhu Mitchell knocking down an early three-pointer to set the tone. The Patriots attacked the paint and played solid defense, but Davidson's late-quarter shooting surge gave the Wildcats a 19-16 lead.
Defense took center stage in the second quarter, as George Mason held Davidson to just 8 points. However, the Patriots struggled to find offensive rhythm, managing only 8 points of their own on 14.3% shooting. Despite the scoring drought, Mason's defensive tenacity kept them within striking distance, trailing just 27-24 at halftime.
The Patriots continued to battle after the break, but Davidson caught fire from beyond the arc, hitting 4-of-5 three-pointers in the third quarter. Even with
Zahirah Walton leading the charge offensively, Mason found itself on the wrong end of an 8-0 run, allowing the Wildcats to extend their lead to 48-37 heading into the fourth.
George Mason fought until the final buzzer, trying to claw back into the game.
Paula Suárez orchestrated the offense, pushing the tempo and finding key scoring opportunities. However, Davidson shot a blistering 70% from the field in the final frame, making it difficult for the Patriots to mount a comeback.
