Fairfax – The George Mason wrestling team competed in its final regular season match of this season tonight in a non-conference dual against American. The Patriots split the matches, but American (10-9, 1-4) earned bonus points in three matches to edge the Patriots 19-17.
George Mason (12-6, 5-2) finished the regular season with 12 wins, the most wins in a season since the 2007-08 team finished 13-5. The Green and Gold recorded 11-win seasons the past two years.
The match started with the 174-pound weight class with an AU win. Caleb Campos earned a major decision against
Riley Hackworth, wrestling in his first dual match of the season. Wrestling up a weight class,
Logan Messer defeated the Eagles Lucas White, 8-1, to notch his 20th win this season.
George Mason would take the lead after 197-pound match. With the match tied at 1-1, grad student
Tyler Kocak earned a last second takedown to win the match, 4-1.
American put together four straight wins, a technical fall by nationally-ranked Will Jerrell, followed by wins at the lightweight classes to take a 19-6 lead on the Patriots with only three matches remaining.
The Patriots would win the next three matches, but come up short with two decisions and a technical fall. #23
Kaden Cassidy defeated Gage Owen at 149 pounds 9-2 to earn his 14th win of the season. #23
DJ McGee won at 157 to earn his 17th win. In the 165-pound match #24
Evan Maag dominated the Eagles Liam Packer, winning 17-2 by technical fall, his seventh this season, in the first period. Maag ranks in the top 10 of all of NCAA
Division I Wrestling in bonus points. The redshirt sophomore is in eighth for most pins with seven.
