FAIRFAX, Va. — George Mason University (5-2) defeated Rider University (1-5), 72-54, at EagleBank Arena, capitalizing on 22 points from turnovers. The Patriots' defensive efforts limited the Broncs to just two free throws made on seven attempts.
George Mason started the first quarter with a focus on fast breaks and bench contributions but struggled with shooting efficiency, connecting on only 3 of 18 field goal attempts. Despite trailing, they narrowed the gap with a critical 3-pointer by
Jada Brown at 4:57, assisted by
Mary Amoateng. Rider maintained the lead with consistent scoring from the perimeter, holding a 14–9 advantage at the end of the quarter.
The Patriots seized control in the second quarter with a strong offensive display, highlighted by a key sequence at 7:02 when Amoateng's fastbreak 3-pointer gave them a lead they would not relinquish. Brown contributed significantly with five points early in the quarter, including a fastbreak 3-pointer. George Mason's defensive efforts were evident, limiting Rider's second chances and forcing four turnovers. By the end of the quarter, Green & Gold expanded their lead and the scoreboard read George Mason 35, Rider 29.
In the third quarter, the Patriots extended their lead with a strong start, highlighted by
Kennedy Harris's early 3-pointer at 9:46, assisted by
Zahirah Walton.
Louis Volker contributed significantly with key offensive rebounds and back-to-back layups, including a fast-break score at 8:05. Rider attempted to close the gap with a 3-pointer by Aliya McIver at 6:17, but George Mason maintained their advantage.
MJ Johnson's layup at 4:19, with an assist from Walton, secured a comfortable margin. Green & Gold ended the quarter ahead 54–42, with a final score of 16–13 for the quarter.
The Patriots secured the win in the final quarter with a series of decisive plays. Walton's 3-pointer at 9:28, assisted by Amoateng, opened the scoring. This was followed by another 3-pointer from Brown at 7:37, extending their lead. George Mason maintained their momentum with effective defense, generating steals and converting fast breaks, including a layup by
Sanyiah Littlejohn at 4:33. The Broncs managed to score from beyond the arc but could not close the gap. The game ended with George Mason triumphing 72–54.
