FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University men's basketball guard
Jahari Long poured in a career-high 25 points and set a new EagleBank Arena building record to push the Patriots past Catawba 86-62 on Tuesday night.
Long made an impressive 16-of-17 free throw attempts, breaking the previous EBA record of 15 set by Nate Langley (1995) and Curtis McCants (1996). The Houston, Texas, product also went 4-of-7 from the floor and is averaging 23.5 points over the Patriots' last two games.
George Mason (3-0) shot 61 percent from the floor and went 7-for-8 (.875) from the 3-point line while making 29-of-33 (.879) attempts from the free throw line. The efficient shooting night and a massive +18 (34-16) rebounding edge helped the Green & Gold overcome 21 turnovers on the night.
Junior
Kory Mincy continued to score at will for the Patriots with 19 points on just eight shots (6-8 FG, 2-2 3pt), while sophomore
Stas Sivka notched a career-best 11 points (2-3 3pt, 5-5 FT) to go with a personal-best three assists in 19 minutes.
Juniors
Malik Presley and
Riley Allenspach added 10 points each for the Green & Gold.
George Mason led by seven (38-31) at the half but hit its stride in the second stanza. The Patriots led by as many as 28 (82-54) with 2:22 to go.
The victory marked the 50
th for head coach
Tony Skinn in just 71 career games, making the Patriot alum the fastest coach in school history to reach the 50 wins mark.
