Fairfax, Va.- George Mason will be hosting the Uvaldo Acosta Tournament with games against St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday and #16 CSUN on Sunday. St.Thomas Aquinas and CSUN will face each other on Saturday, February 1st
UVALDO ACOSTA LEGACY:
Uvaldo Acosta is known to be one of the greatest Mason men's volleyball players ever. He still holds two NCAA tournament records with 27 digs in one match, and 40 digs in one tournament. Acosta was a three-time All-American for the Patriots and led George Mason to the 1988 NCAA Final Four. He was a member of the U.S. National team from 1989-1992. After his playing career, Acosta took over the helm of the George Mason program and in his second year as coach he tragically drowned during a trip to Hawaii with his team at the age of 32. The EIVA Player of the Year award is named after Acosta and each year Mason holds the Uvaldo Acosta Memorial Tournament to honor its alumnus and coach.
The Uvaldo Acosta Tournament:
The Patriots have an eye on breaking a record that has been standing since 2007. The home winning streak is currently at 14 and the current Patriots could reach 15 against St. Thomas Aquinas on January 31
st.
Elijah Lazor was also named the EIVA Defensive Player of the Week for his performances last week. The junior middle blocker totaled eight kills on .500 hitting with a pair of aces and 10 blocks while playing in only five of the Patriots' 10 sets for the week
St. Thomas Aquinas and the Patriots will be facing off for the first time in history with both programs looking to get the upper hand. Both schools currently have a 3-3 and are striving to reach a winning record for the first time in 2025.
On Saturday, the tournament will continue with St. Thomas Aquinas facing #16 CSUN at 3 pm.
The Patriots will be back in action on Sunday, February 2
nd for a ranked match against #16 CSUN. Both teams have faced off five times dating back to 2005 where George Mason was swept by the Matadors. CSUN lead the series with only two losses against the Patriots and three wins, but the last matchup was taken by George Mason in 2024. The Patriots defeated CSUN at Santa Barbara by three sets to one. All five matchups have been played in California, this will be the first time that CSUN has taken the trip to Fairfax, Virginia.
Scouting St. Thomas Aquinas:
- Current overall record is 3-3 including a loss against EIVA opponents Harvard, 0-3
- Sophomore outside hitter, Gabriel Vieira, leads the team in kill with 59
- Junior, Marcus Franck, has the most assists in the team with 145
- Freshman, Ivaylo Todorov, has 44 digs leading his team in that category
- Sophomore, David Weiss, has 21 blocks leading his team in that category
- Freshman, Jannis Freude, leads his team in service aces with five
Scouting #16 CSUN:
- Current overall record is 5-2, losing their last two games against #6 USC and # UCLA
- This weekend's tournament will be their first away games of the season
- Redshirt sophomore, Jalen Phillips, leads his team in kills with 124
- Senior setter, Donovan Constable, is dishing out the assists with 264 and also has the most service aces with 17
- Redshirt sophomore, Chris Karnezis, has the most digs with 44
- Freshman, Stilian Delibosov, leads his team in blocks with 30
