Patriots to Host Revolutionaries on Saturday Afternoon

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's basketball team is back in action on Saturday, January 25 at 3 p.m. at EagleBank Arena where the Patriots will welcome Revolutionary Rival, George Washington. The game will also serve as the team's National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration and Alumni Day.
 
George Mason is 18-30 historically with George Washington. George Mason is 5-2 over George Washington in their last seven matchups, since head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis and her staff took over in the 2021-22 season.
 
Earlier this season, the Patriots dominated the Revs, winning 87-55 in the opening day of conference play. Graduate student Ta'Viyanna Habib scored 20 points on 61.5% shooting, including four three-pointers. The 32-point loss was GW's worst A-10 loss since 2011.

PATRIOT POINTS
  • Sophomore Kennedy Harris and junior Zahirah Walton have led the Patriots in scoring so far this season, averaging 15.8 ppg and 13.4 ppg, respectively.
  • Harris was named A-10 Player of the Week for the week of November 25, 2024 after averaging 25.5 ppg on 51% shooting, 5.5 RPG, 3.5 apg, and 2.0 spg that week
  • On Wednesday, head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis was named to the Kathy Delaney-Smith Mid-Major Coach of the Year Mid-Season Watch List.
  • The Patriots checked in at #45 in the first NET ranking of the 2024-25 season. They then moved to #40 after their win over GW and stayed there after their wins over Georgetown and UMES. #40 is the highest NET ranking for the women's basketball program since the NET rankings debuted in 2018. They currently stand at #48
  • George Mason is currently listed in the "First Four Out" group in the NCAA Tournament per ESPN's Bracketology.
  • The Jan. 2 game vs. Saint Joseph's set a George Mason women's basketball attendance record at 3,354.
  • Two of the Patriots' first four wins came against teams that made the NCAA Tournament in the last two years: Monmouth and Marshall.
  • Prior to the start of the 2024-25 season, Mason was picked to finish third out of 15 teams in the conference, their highest preseason pick since joining the Atlantic 10.
  • Mason returns ten letter winners and three starters from last season's squad, including captains Paula Suárez and Nalani Kaysia, last year's A-10 Rookie of the Year Zahirah Walton, and preseason third team selections Ta'Viyanna Habib and Kennedy Harris.
  • Last season, the Patriots posted their first 20+ win season since 2017-18 when the team went 24-10.
 
SCOUTING THE REVOLUTIONARIES
The Revolutionaries are 8-10 overall and 1-6 in the Atlantic 10. Earlier this season, the Patriots opened their Atlantic 10 conference play with a dominant victory 87-55 over regional rival George Washington. The Patriots were up 12 at halftime and 23 at the end of the third quarter, a lead they maintained through the final whistle.
 
Two players are currently averaging double figures in scoring, led by graduate student Makayla Andrews, who earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors last year. She averages 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Freshman Gabby Reynolds is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. She leads the team in steals with 23.
 
Another notable player is graduate student Paige Mott, who is tied for first in rebounds per game, averaging 6.2. She also averages 7.2 points per game. Sara Lewis is also tied for first in rebounds per game with 6.2, averages 7.0 points per game, and leads the team in blocks with 14.
 
As a team, George Washington boasts the best rebounding team in the Atlantic 10, grabbing 41.94 per game, which ranks them 19th nationally. They rank first in the conference for defensive rebounds (27.9) and third for offensive rebounds per game (14.0).

The Patriots hit the road for a two-game road trip against St. Louis (Jan. 29) and Dayton (Feb. 1). Both games will be available to watch on ESPN+.
