DAYTON, Ohio – The George Mason University men's basketball team (13-5, 4-1) soared into first place in the Atlantic 10 with a commanding 67-59 victory at Dayton (11-6, 1-3) Wednesday night inside UD Arena.
The Patriots led by as many as 20 (58-38) in the second half and 19 (65-46) with under seven minutes to play. The Flyers used a late 13-0 run to move within six (65-59) with less than a minute remaining, but
K.D. Johnson hit two free throws to ice it for the Patriots.
Dayton is 26-2 in its last 28 games inside UD Arena, with both losses coming to the Patriots. The Flyers were 10-0 at home this season entering Wednesday's game.
"This is why we scheduled the way we scheduled," head coach Tony Skinn ('06) said. "We had a chance to go to Marquette in front of a rowdy crowd and we had a chance to go to Duke. If that's not one of the toughest places to play, I don't know what is. We were prepared for this. The guys locked in and knew how competitive they needed to be in this atmosphere. We made a couple shots early which gave us the confidence to propel us to the win."
The Patriots tied a season high with 11 3-pointers and shot 55 percent from deep in the win. GM also held a 32-23 edge on the glass and a 18-10 advantage in bench points for the game.

Darius Maddox played his best game of the season for GM, notching a game-high 20 points on an efficient 8-11 (4-5 3pt) shooting night. He added four assists and three rebounds in 35 minutes.

Jalen Haynes added 12 points (5-8 FG) in 27 minutes and junior
Brayden O'Connor chipped in eight points and four assists. Johnson added nine points, two assists and two steals.
GM jumped out to a 6-0 advantage and used a 7-0 run to build a 10-point edge (17-7) at the 14:09 mark of the first half. The Patriots pushed their lead to 17 (28-11) on the strength of another run, this one of the 11-1 variety. Dayton moved back within 12 at 30-18, but the Patriots headed into the break up 14 (41-27).

Zach Anderson 3-pointer propelled GM back up 17 at 46-29 and a lay-in from
K.D. Johnson pushed the advantage to 20 (58-38) with 11:01 to play.
Next up, George Mason returns home for a nationally-televised Saturday afternoon contest vs. rival George Washington. Tip-off inside EagleBank Arena is set for 12:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on USA Network.
