FAIRFAX, Va. - The Patriots women's volleyball team won their opening game of the Tribe Invitational against Quinnipiac, 3-1. George Mason battled hard, taking two sets beyond 25 in order to get the win: 25-19, 27-25, 17-25, 28-26.
The Patriots controlled set one and two, maintaining the lead from the first serve of the game, and scoring the last three consecutive points to win, 25-19.
The second set started off in favor of the Bobcats as they opened on a 10-3 run over the Patriots. But the Patriots never quit, and though there were no runs longer than a few points, they clawed their way back into the game, eventually tying the match 24-24, then again at 25-25, and then scored the final two points off the service of senior
Ewelina Gacek.
The third set started off back and forth, but the Bobcats eventually took control and finished the set with a handily eight-point win, 25-17.
The fourth set started off with a four-point Bobcat run, but the Patriots never quit. There were 13 ties and five lead changes in this set, with each team exchanging runs of three or four points to stay within the other's grasp. This was the first ever meet up between George Mason and Quinnipiac, but they will face off again in the Mason Invite on Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m. at the RAC.
By the Numbers
- Senior Olyvia Kennedy led the Patriots with 16 kills and 4 blocks
- Sophomore Chelsea Colter tallied a career-high 10 kills and added 6 blocks
- Sophomore Camryn Weldon had a double-double of 24 assists and 10 digs
- The Patriots outscored the Bobcats in kills, 52-48, and blocks, 9-5
