FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team went 0-2 this weekend against VCU. In both matches, the Patriots (5-9, 0-2 A-10) lost 3-1 to the Rams (4-6, 2-0 A-10).
In game one on Friday, the Patriots started off slow, dropping the first set, 16-25.
They battled in the second set, tying the set 24-24, but the Rams scored two straight points and won the set, 26-24.
The Patriots owned set three after an eight-point run off the service of sophomore
Autumn Martinez-Robinson. They fended off a late Rams run to win the third set, 25-21.
In the fourth set, an initial close back-and-forth was quickly taken over by VCU, who controlled the rest of the match and won the final set, 25-15.
In Saturday's game, the Green & Gold played four close matches against the Rams. In set one, the Rams jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but the Patriots didn't quit. They battled back and tied the game at 22-22, but VCU finished the game with three straight points.
The Patriots gritted out the second set. With 12 ties and seven lead changes, the game was tied at 24-24. The Rams broke that tie, but it was the Patriots who had the final word, scoring three straight and winning the set, 27-25.
The third and fourth sets were both controlled by the Rams. The Patriots never quit, fighting to keep themselves within winning distance, but in the end, VCU won both sets and the game.
