Patriots Fall to Old Dominion

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team fell to Old Dominion, 1-0, on Sunday night at ODU Soccer Stadium in Norfolk, Va.
 
Old Dominion scored the lone goal of the match in the 83rd minute of play.
 
George Mason (5-1-0) and ODU (4-2-1) were scoreless after the first half in a defensive battle with the Patriots recording the lone shot on frame.
 
The Patriots had the best scoring chance of the first half in the 35th minute.  Sophomore midfielder James Eliuda hit the crossbar with a shot from 10 yards out.
 
George Mason applied the pressure early in the second half and had a scoring chance in the 48th minute but the shot went high.
 
In the 83rd minute, Old Dominion junior forward Michael Eberle scored into the lower left corner from 16 yards out.
 
The Monarchs registered all four of their shots on goal in the second half.
 
George Mason senior goalkeeper Jaume Salvado (5-1-0) made three saves in the match.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Monarchs outshot the Patriots, 12-11, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.  Old Dominion had five corner kicks and George Mason finished with one corner kick in the match.
 
Freshman forward Quentin Clain and Eliuda led the Patriots with two shots in the match.  Eliuda posted the Patriots lone shot on goal.
 
Graduate student defenders Leo Lemoine, Luis Maestre and Jordi Navio Sanchez, graduate student forward Marek Gonda, graduate student midfielder Henry Wachsman, senior defender Javi Sanchez, sophomore midfielder Javier Montava, Eliuda, and Clain each played 90 minutes in the match.

The Patriots have nearly a week between matches before they open Atlantic 10 play at Massachusetts on Saturday, Sept. 21 with the opening kick scheduled for noon in Amherst, Mass.
