Gonda Nets Game-Winner, Patriots Blank UNCW

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 victory over UNC Wilmington on Thursday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium in Wilmington, N.C.
 
The Patriots have won their first five matches of the season for the first time since the 2014 campaign.  It's just the seventh time in program history that the Patriots have started a season with at least five straight victories (1981, 1982, 1985, 1991, 2012, 2014, 2024).
 
George Mason (5-0-0) took the lead over UNCW (1-1-3) in the 25th minute of play.
 
Graduate student forward Marek Gonda scored into the lower left corner to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.  Graduate student defender Luis Maestre and sophomore midfielder Javier Montava each notched an assist.
 
The Patriots have scored the first goal in all five matches.
 
George Mason senior goalkeeper Jaume Salvado improved to 5-0-0 with his third clean sheet of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Patriots outshot the Seahawks, 13-5, including a 10-0 advantage in shots on goal.  George Mason and UNCW finished with three corner kicks in the match.
 
Gonda (79 minutes) led all players with three shots on goal and Maestre finished with two shots on goal.  
 
Graduate student defender Jordi Navio Sanchez (80 minutes), graduate student midfielder Henry Wachsman (75 minutes), senior defender Javi Sanchez, sophomore midfielder Quentin Clain, and freshman forward Martim Sereno (45 minutes) each recorded one shot on frame.
 
Graduate student defender Leo Lemoine, sophomore midfielder James Eliuda, Javi Sanchez, Clain, Montava and Maestre each played 90 minutes in the match.

The Patriots travel to face Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 15 with the opening kick scheduled for 6 p.m. at ODU Soccer Stadium in Norfolk, Va.
