FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason women's volleyball lost their midday match up to American University, 3-0. The Eagles (2-0) took the Patriots (0-2) in straight sets: 25-23, 25-17, 25-19.
The first set was a game of point exchanges with 10 ties and four lead changes. American finally broke the back and forth when it was 15-15 by putting up three consecutive points.
Freshman
Jordan Lucas made a splash with the opening point of her Patriots debut by serving an ace just seconds after subbing in. But in the end, the Eagles executed their offense just well enough to sneak out a two-point win, 25-23.
The second set was a series of runs. It opened with four consecutive points by the Eagles, only to be answered by five straight points from the Patriots. A few points back and forth was followed by another run for the Eagles, five unanswered points this time, but the Patriots rallied again with four straight points to give them an 11-10 lead.
The two teams exchanged points until it was 16-16, but it was all American from there on out. A 9-1 run closed out the second set, giving the Eagles a 25-17 win.
In the third and final set, the Patriots dug themselves into a hole that proved too much to overcome. An opening point kill from sophomore
Haley Graetz started the Green & Gold off on the right foot, but American responded with four consecutive points, and the Patriots never fully recovered, eventually losing 25-19.
