Wachsman Nets Game-winner, Patriots Down Navy in Season Opener

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team defeated Navy, 2-0, in the season opener on Thursday night at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Md.
 
George Mason (1-0-0) took the lead over the Midshipmen (0-1-0) in the 22nd minute of play.
 
Patriots graduate student midfielder Henry Wachsman scored the eventual game-winning goal with a header into the upper right corner from six yard out.  Graduate student defender Luis Maestre and sophomore midfielder Javier Montava each picked up an assist on the goal.
 
Sophomore midfielder James Eliuda made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute when he found the back of the net from six yards out off a cross from graduate student defender Jordi Navio Sanchez.  Freshman forward Martim Sereno recorded his first collegiate assist on the play.
 
Mason graduate student goalkeeper Jaume Salvado (1-0-0) made one save, while Navy senior goalkeeper Pierce Holbrock made four saves in the match.
 
The Patriots held the Midshipmen without a shot on goal until the final minutes of the match.
 
HOW THEY SCORED
 
22' | Wachsman scored with a header into the upper right corner from just outside the six.
53' | Eliuda scored into the lower center from six yards out off the right foot.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

George Mason outshot Navy, 15-10, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.  The Midshipmen finished with five corner kicks, while Patriots had four corner kicks in the match.
 
Sereno led all players with four shots and recorded his first NCAA assist in his collegiate debut.  Sophomore midfielder Quentin Clain registered three shots and led the Patriots with two shots on goal.  Montava recorded one shot on goal and posted an assist in his George Mason debut.  
 
Graduate student forward Marek Gonda, graduate student defender Leo Lemoine, Jordi Navio Sanchez, Clain, Sereno and Montava each made their George Mason debut.
 
NEXT FOR MASON
 
The Patriots play their first home match of the season against Delaware on Friday, Aug. 30 with the opening kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
