FAIRFAX, Va. – Sophomore starter
Connor Knox tossed five innings of no-hit ball to earn his first collegiate win to lead the George Mason baseball team to a 9-3 victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Knox struck out a career-high eight batters and allowed just two baserunners and one run in the outing.
Graduate student designated hitter
Socrates Bardatsos went 3-for-3 with three doubles, one RBI and two runs scored.
George Mason (20-26, 6-12 A10) took the lead against UMES (0-42, 0-24 NEC) sophomore starter Tyler Prather in the bottom of the first inning.
Graduate student second baseman
South Trimble singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. With one out, sophomore right fielder
James Quinn-Irons drove in a run with a single to right field to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, Bardatsos doubled and junior shortstop
Carsen Pracht knocked in a run with a single up the middle to make it 2-0.
Freshman catcher
J.P. Williams then doubled to left-center field to put runners on second and third. Senior left fielder
Derek Wood reached on a fielder's choice to first base with Pracht beating the throw home to increase the lead to 3-0. Williams then scored from third on a balk to extend the advantage to 4-0.
The Hawks got on the board in the top of the third. With one out, senior outfielder Jason Brown walked and stole second. With two outs, Brown moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a wild pitch.
In the home half of the third, junior first baseman
Reece Woody led off with a double and with one out, Bardatsos doubled down the right field line to make it a 5-1 game.
The Patriots added two runs in the bottom of the fourth against UMES junior Gary Hallmen. Wood was hit by a pitch and stole second. After Trimble was issued a free pass, the Patriots executed a double steal to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Senior center fielder
Jordan Smith drove in two runs with a single down the left field line to pad the lead to 7-1.
The Patriots added a run in the bottom of the fifth against UMES junior Brandon Gomez. Bardatsos hit his third double of the game, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Pracht to make it 8-1.
George Mason plated a run in the bottom of the sixth against UMES sophomore Joe Kelly. Wood led off with a single, stole second and moved to third of a fly out. Junior pinch hitter
Brandon Parks then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, with Wood racing home with the Patriots final run of the game.
The Hawks plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh against Mason freshman
Ty Uchman for the 9-3 final score.
For the Patriots, Knox (1-1) didn't allow a hit and struck out eight in 5.0 innings to earn his first NCAA win. Freshman
Brant Ertel tossed 1.0 hitless inning. Uchman gave up two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings. Graduate student
Luke Goodyear pitched 1.0 hitless inning.
For the Hawks, Prather (0-4) allowed five runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings and took the loss. Hallmen surrendered two runs on one hit in 1.0 inning of work. Gomez and Kelly each gave up one run on one hit in 1.0 inning.
Bardatsos went 3-for-3 with three doubles, one RBI and two runs scored. Pracht was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Smith finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.
The Patriots are on the road to face Towson on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md.
