ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The George Mason baseball team fell to Saint Louis, 5-2, in the middle game of the series on Saturday afternoon at Billiken Sports Complex in St. Louis, Mo.
Senior center fielder
Jordan Smith hit his seventh home run of the season and junior first baseman
Connor Dykstra had three hits in the game.
Mason (19-25, 6-11 A10) took the lead against Saint Louis (32-11, 12-5 A10) sophomore starter Charlie Weber in the top of the first.
Graduate student left fielder
Ben Jones led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior right fielder
Derek Wood. Smith the hit his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center to put the Patriots in front, 2-0.
Mason junior starter
Chad Gartland retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced in the game before the Billikens evened the score in the fourth inning.
With one out, the Billikens dented the scoreboard when senior right fielder Drew Winters hit a solo home run to left. Senior first baseman Cole Smith then singled and stole second. With two outs, senior left fielder Tyler Fogarty singled in a run to make it a 2-2 game.
Gartland then retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced from the fourth through the seventh.
In the home half of the eighth, the first two batters for the Billikens singled to put runners on first and second. Junior Ethan Sitzman then reached on fielder's choice sacrifice bunt, with both baserunners scoring on an error to put the Billikens in front, 4-2.
Winters drove in the final run of the game with a single off Mason junior reliever
Britt Yount for the 5-2 final score.
For the Patriots, Gartland (2-4) allowed five runs, two earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks in 7.0 innings. Yount gave up one hit in 1.0 inning of work.
For the Billikens, Weber allowed two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings. Freshman Josh Cunningham tossed 2.1 scoreless innings. Junior Evan Gray (2-2) pitched 1.2 hitless innings to earn the win.
Smith went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run. He now has 45 RBI on the season. Dykstra was 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.
The Patriots and Billikens play the final game of the series on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Billiken Sports Complex in St. Louis, Mo.
