FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason Assistant Vice President/Director of Athletics Marvin Lewis named interim head coach Jamie Greenwood to the full-time position leading the men's and women's swimming and diving teams.

Greenwood served as interim coach for the 2023-24 season, his fifth year overall with the program.

"During his year as our interim head coach, Jamie demonstrated that he was the perfect leader to continue to direct our men's & women's swimming program," said Lewis.  "Our student-athletes responded extremely well to Jamie and were energized by his holistic approach.  The team's individual and collective success in the pool is a testament to Jamie's hard work, collaborative approach and steadfast commitment to our program.  We are excited for Jamie's new opportunity and encouraged about the bright future ahead for our George Mason men's and women's swimming programs."

The Patriots have performed very well under the tutelage of Greenwood.

In 2019-20, Greenwood helped guide the Patriots' men's team to the 2020 Atlantic 10 Championship, the first title in program history. The two teams account for nine top-5 finishes during his tenure, including four times as runners-up on the men's side.

"I am thrilled to have this opportunity, and I am so grateful for the trust and confidence that Marvin (Lewis) and the senior leadership team have instilled in me to lead this program moving forward," said Greenwood.  "I'm equally excited to continue working with our determined, talented and impressive group of student athletes at George Mason."

Greenwood follows Peter Ward, who retired in 2023 after starting and leading the George Mason swimming and diving programs for 25 years.

"I could not be more pleased to have Jamie Greenwood take over the George Mason swimming and diving program," said Ward. "Jamie is an intelligent and thoughtful coach who connects extremely well with our student athletes. He has exceeded all expectations since he arrived on campus five years ago as an assistant. The program is in a great place because of Jamie's hard work and commitment. I am excited for the future of the program and all the great things the team will achieve under Jamie's leadership."

Greenwood and the Patriots had an impressive showing at the 2024 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships. Junior Ali Tyler won three individual titles, while the women's team won three relay medals with a silver in the 400-yard freestyle relay and bronze in both the 400-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay.

On the men's side, sophomore Tate Anderson won the A-10 title in the 200-yard freestyle and claimed two more medals.  The men's team earned a spot on the podium nine times, including the silver medal by Alex Crown in the 1650-yard freestyle. The George Mason men's team also won two relay medals, with silver in the 800-yard freestyle relay and bronze in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The program has had its fair share of top award-winners during Greenwood's time at Mason.

Tyler was named Rookie Performer of the 2022 A-10 Championships after winning individual titles in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke.

Senior Marina Toone was named A-10 Most Outstanding Women's Diver at the 2021 A-10 Swimming and Diving Championships.  She won the Atlantic 10 Championship in the three-meter and a silver medal in the one-meter event.  Senior Drake Moretz recorded five top-three performances during the season and was selected to the A-10 Academic All-Conference Team.
