PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the final game of the series at Saint Joseph's, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Smithson Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Patriots junior pinch-hitter
Reece Woody broke up a no-hitter with a leadoff single on the first pitch in the top of the ninth. The Patriots scored both of their runs on three hits in the final frame.
Saint Joseph's sophomore starter Ryan DeSanto took a no-hitter into the ninth as the Hawks completed a three-game sweep over the Patriots.
Saint Joseph's (23-23, 11-10 A10) took the lead against George Mason (20-30, 6-15 A10) senior starter
Ryan Peterson in the bottom of the second.
With one out, Hawks senior catcher Justin Igoe doubled and freshman second baseman Tim Dickinson singled to put runners on the corners. Senior right fielder Ryan Picollo then hit a three-run home run to left field to put the Hawks in front, 3-0.
Saint Joseph's added a run in the home half of the third. Junior left fielder Ryan Cesarini singled and went to third on a two-base error to start the inning. Hawks sophomore shortstop Ryan Weingartner plated a run with a groundout to make it 4-0.
The Hawks tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth. After back-to-back singles to start the inning put runners on the corners, Dickinson lifted a sacrifice fly to center to extend the lead to 5-0.
In the top of the ninth, George Mason senior center fielder
Jordan Smith drove in a run with a ground out and graduate student left fielder
Ben Jones drove in a run with a single.
For the Patriots, Peterson (2-2) allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits in 7.0 innings. Sophomore
Logan Rumberg pitched 1.0 scoreless inning.
For the Hawks, DeSanto (3-2) gave up one run on one hit with nine strikeouts and no walks in 8.1 innings. Graduate student Alec Rodriguez allowed one run on two hits in the ninth.
The Patriots return home to face William & Mary on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
