FAIRFAX, Va. – The Patriots downed George Washington, 13-10, on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field to take two-of-three in the series against the Revolutionaries.
Senior center fielder
Jordan Smith had four hits, including three doubles, drove in four runs and scored three runs. Junior catcher
Connor Dykstra had a pair of hits, drove in two runs, scored two runs and stole three bases. Junior shortstop
Carsen Pracht collected three hits with one RBI and one run scored.
Mason (15-15, 3-3 A10) took the lead against George Washington (19-12, 4-2 A10) graduate student starter Graham Jeffries in the bottom of the first.
Graduate student second baseman
South Trimble led off with a double to the gap in left-center and Smith followed with a bloop single to center. After a sacrifice bunt by junior first baseman
Reece Woody moved the runners into scoring position, Smith raced home on a wild pitch to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, the Patriots sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits.
Dykstra led off with a walk a stole second. Sophomore third baseman
Evan Blanchard then reached on a throwing error to put runners on the corners. Pracht and senior right fielder
Derek Wood followed with back-to-back RBI-singles to make it 3-0.
With one out, Smith cleared the bases with a double to left field to increase the lead to 5-0. Woody then drove in Smith from second with a single through the right side for a Mason 6-0 advantage.
Patriots senior starter
Ryan Peterson kept George Washington off the board through the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth, the Revolutionaries scored four runs on two hits to cut the Mason lead to 6-4.
With the bases loaded after a hit batsman and two walks, freshman shortstop Nick Mullen plated a pair of runs with a single and junior right fielder Sam Gates knocked in two runs with a double.
George Washington threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with one out with a single, throwing error and a walk. Mason junior reliever
Britt Yount entered the game and got Revolutionaries third baseman Bobby Wacker to roll into an inning-ending double play.
In the top of the sixth, George Washington scored four runs on three hits to take an 8-6 lead. Gates drove in the first two runs of the inning with a double to right-center. After the Patriots summoned freshman
Shaun Okeeffe from the bullpen, George Washington freshman catcher Robbie Lavey hit a two-run home run.
Mason responded in the home half of the sixth.
Trimble led off with a walk and Smith doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. The Revolutionaries made a pitching change, with graduate student Brandon Siegenthaler taking over on the mount.
With one out, graduate student left fielder
Ben Jones drove in a run with a ground out to make it a one-run game at 8-7.
Sophomore designated hitter
James Quinn-Irons walked and stole second, and Dykstra delivered a two-run single through the right side to give the Patriots the lead back at 9-8.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Wood walked, Trimble singled and both advanced on a failed pickoff attempt. Smith then doubled in pair of runs to make the score 11-8.
With two outs in the inning, Smith scrambled home on a passed ball to extend the advantage to 12-8.
Mason sophomore
Logan Rumberg entered the game for the seventh and would work the final three innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, Dykstra singled and stole both second and third. Blanchard then dropped down a bunt, with Dykstra sliding across the plate to make it 13-8.
George Washington scored two runs on three hits in the top of the ninth for the 13-10 final score.
For the Patriots, Peterson allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits in 5.1 innings. Yount gave up three runs on two hits in 1.0 inning. Okeeffe (2-0) allowed one run on one hit, retired two batters and picked up the win. Rumberg gave up two runs on five hits and struck out six in 3.0 innings and notched the save.
The Revolutionaries used six pitchers in the game. Jefferies surrendered six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 1.1 innings. Siegenthaler (1-1) gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits in 1.1 innings and took the loss.
Smith went 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Trimble was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Dykstra finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Woody, Jones, Blanchard, Pracht and Wood each drove in a run.
The Patriots travel to take on VMI on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Grey-Minor Stadium in Lexington, Va.
