Fairfax, Va.- George Mason remains undefeated at the RAC, winning their eighth game out of eight games played. Sacred Heart were not able to contain the offensive forces of the Patriots, especially by
Jack Bolz who achieved a career-high of kills with 23. The freshman
Robert Evangelista had an outstanding performance in the court once again to fight for a starting spot.
The first set began with Mason recording a four-point lead, 8-4, with the defensive efforts by
Sam Peters,
Omar Hoyos, and
Troy McDonald. George Mason will later go on a six-point run to extend their lead to 14-5,
Sam Peters recorded two consecutive service aces during that run. The Pioneers struggled to get back into the game and the Patriots ended the set with two kills by
Jack Bolz.
Sacred Heart came out inspired in the second set, going back and forth with the Patriot. It seemed for a while that Mason would run away with the lead again when they scored four consecutive points to make the score, 12-9. The Pioneers were determined to win the second set and made an unexpected five point run to tie the game at 20. Mason would reach the 23
rd point first but Sacred Heart scored three consecutive points to reach set point first. Mason was able to tie at 24 with a kill by
Robert Evangelista but Sacred Heart scored the final two points needed to tie the game up, 1-1.
Mason did not want to go through the same problems that happened in the second set and quickly achieved a lead of 11-6. The Pioneers recorded four consecutive points once again and closed the gap to just one point, 10-11. The game was back and forth but the Patriots achieved the 25
th point with a kill by
Colin Heath.
Sacred Heart had a goal of extending the game to five sets and Mason wanted to finalize the game. There were five occasions in the beginning of the set where the game was tied but for every point that Sacred Heart scored, Mason would score three. Mason had a 10-point lead, 23-13, before the Pioneers scored their final point of the night. Mason scored the 24
th point with a kill by
Omar Hoyos and
Robert Evangelista achieved the 25
th point with a solo block.
