RICHMOND, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the first game of its series to Richmond, 6-5, on Friday afternoon at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va.
Junior first baseman
Reece Woody went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored and graduate student left fielder
Ben Jones finished 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Mason (12-13, 0-1 A10) senior starter
Nick Martins retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced in the game.
The Patriots took the lead against Richmond (10-15, 1-0 A10) graduate student starter Kyle Roche in the top of the third.
Senior right fielder
Derek Wood led off with a single and with one out, senior center fielder
Jordan Smith singled to put runners on the corners. Woody then grounded to short, with Wood crossing the plate to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
In the top of the fifth, junior shortstop
Carsen Pracht singled, Wood dropped down a bunt single and graduate student second baseman
South Trimble put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. With two outs, Woody drove in a pair of runs with a single to increase the lead to 3-0.
Richmond got on the board with a pair of runs with two singles and a triple in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game at 3-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, Spiders sophomore first baseman Jordan Jaffe hit a two-out solo home run to tie the game.
The Patriots took the lead back in the top of the ninth. With two outs, Smith reached on a throwing error, Woody drew a walk and junior catcher
Connor Dykstra was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jones then plated two runs with a single to right field to give the Patriots a 5-3 advantage.
Richmond scored three runs on a single, three hit batters and two walks in the bottom of the ninth for the 6-5 walk-off win.
For the Patriots, Martins allowed two runs on five hits in 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore
Logan Rumberg (1-2) was charged with one run in the ninth.
Woody went 2-for-4 with three RBI, Jones was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Wood finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Patriots and Spiders play the middle game of the series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va.
