RESULTS
Williamsburg, Va. -- The George Mason men's golf team earned runner-up honors, the team's best finish of the season, at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate played at the famed public course in Williamsburg, Va.
It was a two-team battle in the final round with Princeton, but the Tigers bested the Patriots by three strokes today to stretch the lead to five strokes and earn medalist honors. Longwood was a distant third, eight strokes back of the Patriots.
Mason had two players finish in the top 5 led by
Nikita Gubenko (68-72-71=211) on the par 71, 6,817-yard course. The senior finished a career-best third overall in the field of 77 players. It's his third top 15 finish this season.
Gubenko led all individuals in both par 3 (E) and par 5 (-6) scoring throughout the 54-hole event.
Freshman
JJ Powell (73-72-68=213) earned a second straight top 10 standing with a fourth-place finish, the best in his first collegiate year. Powell carded a 3-under-par 68 in the final round, moving up nine places on the board after 36 holes. Powell has posted five top 25 finishes in eight tournaments this season.
A native of Midlothian, Va., Powell ranked third overall in birdies (13) in the tournament, including six in the final round today.
As a team, the Patriots led the field in both par 3 (+12) and par 5 (-18) scoring.
Prior to this tournament, Mason finished a season-best third at the Red Bandana Invitational, the opening tournament of the season.
Colin Slater (72-76-73=221) and
Samir Davidov (74-72-75=221) each finished t-20 with eight-over-par 54-hole scores.
Sophomore
Aryan Vuradi recorded his best round of the tournament with an even-par 71 in the final round.
