FAIRFAX, Va. – The Patriots swept a doubleheader from Villanova with a 6-5 walk-off win in game one and a 3-2 victory in the nightcap on Friday at Spuhler Field.
Over the two games, graduate student second baseman
South Trimble went 3-for-7 with two runs scored, senior center fielder
Jordan Smith was 3-for-6 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored and junior first baseman
Reece Woody went 3-for-7 with two doubles, three RBI and one run scored.
Senior
Nick Martins allowed one earned run in 5.0 innings in a no-decision in game one. Redshirt sophomore
Konner Eaton threw a complete game, allowed one earned run and struck out seven in game two.
GAME ONE
Mason took the lead against Villanova graduate student starter Rian Schwede with three consecutive doubles in the bottom of the first.
With one out, Smith doubled down the left field line, Woody followed with a double to left and junior catcher
Connor Dykstra doubled to left to put the Patriots in front, 2-0.
The Wildcats took advantage of an error to get on the board in the top of the second. With one out, senior shortstop Cameron Hassert singled to left center. Freshman second baseman Trent Toole singled through the right side with both runners moving into scoring position on a fielding error.
Villanova plated a pair of runs with a single and a groundout to tie the score, 2-2.
In the bottom of the third, Trimble led off with a single, went to second on a ground out and then stole third. With two outs, Dykstra walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error while Trimble scored on the play to make it a 3-2 game.
Graduate student designated hitter
Ben Jones then knocked in a run with a single to center to increase the lead to 4-2.
With one out in the fourth, senior outfielder
Derek Wood walked, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. He would scramble home on a wild pitch to extend the advantage to 5-2.
In the top of the fifth, graduate student left fielder Scott Shaw led off with a double to right-center and graduate student catcher Jason Neff singled to shortstop. Both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and Hassert drove in a run with a ground out to cut the lead to 5-3.
The Wildcats began the top of the seventh with back-to-back singles against Mason junior
Britt Yount. Neff plated a run with a sacrifice fly and graduate student first baseman Dylan Dennis drove in another with a single to tie the game, 5-5.
Villanova threatened in the top of the eighth against Mason sophomore
Logan Rumberg. With one out, the Wildcats loaded the bases with a hit by pitch, a fielder's choice and a walk.
Rumberg turned Villanova away, getting both Neff and Dennis to foul out to end the inning.
In the bottom on the ninth, junior shortstop
Carsen Pracht drew a leadoff walk against Villanova graduate student reliever Alec Sachais. Wood then singled to right-center to put runners on the corners with no outs.
After Wood stole second, Trimble was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
With Smith at the plate, Pracht raced home on a wild pitch to lift the Patriots to the 6-5 walk-off victory.
For the Patriots, Martins allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits in 5.0 innings. Yount gave up two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings. Rumberg (1-1) tossed 2.0 hitless frames to earn his first win of the season.
For the Wildcats, Schwede allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits in 5.0 innings. Sachais (2-1) surrendered the winning run in the ninth.
Woody went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored and Smith was 2-for-4 with two doubles and one run scored. Dykstra and Jones each drove in a run.
GAME TWO
Villanova took the lead in the top of the first. Senior right fielder Jack O'Reilly reached on a throwing error and Shaw followed with a RBI-single to put the Wildcats in front, 1-0.
The Patriots responded in the home half of the inning against Wildcats senior starter Devin Rivera.
Trimble singled through the right side and stole second. Smith then singled to left-center, with Trimble rumbling around from second to tie the game, 1-1.
Mason took the lead for good in the bottom of the third.
With one out, Pracht singled and went to second on a ground out. Smith was hit by a pitch and Woody drove in two runs with a double to the gap in left-center to make the score 3-1.
Eaton retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced from the second through the fifth.
Villanova made it a one-run game in the top of the sixth with a RBI-double but Shaw got caught in a rundown for the final out of the inning.
Eaton retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to notch the win.
For the Patriots, Eaton (2-2) allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits in the complete game victory. He struck out seven and walked only one.
For the Wildcats, Rivera (0-4) allowed three runs on five hits in 5.2 innings and took the loss.
Trimble had two hits and Woody drove in a pair of runs in the game for Mason.
The Patriots and Wildcats wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
