FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped its midweek game to Longwood, 9-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Mason (9-11) took the lead against Longwood (10-11) senior starter Andrew Potojecki in the bottom of the first.
With one out, senior center fielder
Jordan Smith singled through the left side and moved to second on a ground out. Junior first baseman
Reece Woody then singled up the middle to put the Patriots up, 1-0.
The Lancers got on the board in the top of the second against Mason senior starter
Kyle Menaker. Graduate student shortstop Noah Campanelli singled and went to second on a failed pickoff attempt. With one out, freshman center fielder Blagen Pado drove in a run with a single to left center to tie the game.
The teams traded runs in the fourth.
With two outs in the top of the inning, Longwood sophomore first baseman Matt Stevenson doubled to right and scored on a single by senior catcher Corbin McCloud to make it 2-1.
In the home half of the inning, Woody led off with a double and with one out, graduate student left fielder
Ben Jones singled to short. After both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch., graduate student catcher
Socrates Bardatsos grounded out, with Woody racing home to even the score, 2-2.
In the top of the sixth, Longwood sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs on three hits and four walks to take a 7-2 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Jones led off with a walk and Bardatsos singled through the right side. With runners on the corners after a fly out, junior shortstop
Carsen Pracht reached on a throwing error, with Jones scoring on the play to make it 7-3.
Graduate student second baseman
South Trimble then reached on a throwing error, with Bardatsos crossing the plate to cut the lead to 7-4, but that would be the final run of the game for the Patriots.
The Lancers added single runs in the eighth and ninth for the 9-4 final score.
The Patriots used six pitchers in the game. Menaker allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in 3.2 innings. Sophomore
Connor Knox (0-1) surrendered five runs, four earned, on three hits and took the loss.
The Lancers used seven pitchers in the game. Potojecki allowed one run on two hits in 2.0 innings. Sophomore Wyatt Bunch (1-1) gave up one hit in 1.0 inning of work and picked up the win.
Woody went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, Trimble was 2-for-5 with one RBI and Bardatsos and Pracht each drove in a run in the game.
The Patriots open a three-game series against Villanova on Friday, March 22 with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
