FAIRFAX, Va. – The Patriots concluded their season-high eight-game homestand with a 15-5 win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Senior center fielder
Jordan Smith, sophomore second baseman
Evan Blanchard and freshman first baseman
Owen Hull each drove in three runs in the game.
Freshman
Toby Hueber pitched the final four innings to earn his first collegiate win.
Mason (9-7) took the lead against UMES (0-11) sophomore starter Tyler Prather in the bottom of the first.
Graduate student third baseman
South Trimble led off with a double and both Smith and graduate student designated hitter
Ben Jones were hit by a pitch. Junior first baseman
Reece Woody then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
The Hawks got on the board in the top of the second against Mason sophomore starter
Connor Knox. Junior designated hitter Doyle McNew led off with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on an error when UMES put runners on the corners. After a stolen base, junior right fielder Michael Blackiston drove in a run with a ground out to tie the game.
With two outs in the top of the third, the Hawks loaded the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch. Freshman catcher Bronson Taylor then raced home on a wild pitch to give UMES a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Patriots sent 14 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on four hits and five walks to build a 9-2 advantage.
Graduate student catcher
Socrates Bardatsos singled, Blanchard reached on an error and Trimble singled to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth. Smith then bounced a two-run single down the left field line to increase the lead to 11-2.
The Hawks plated a run in the top of the fifth on a RBI-single by Blackiston to make the score 11-3.
Mason added three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Hull and a sacrifice fly by Blanchard to pad the lead to 14-3.
Woody drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 15-3.
The Hawks scored two runs in the top of the seventh on a RBI-double by McNew and a RBI-single by senior third baseman Ulysses Luciano for the 15-5 final score in seven innings.
For the Patriots, Knox allowed one unearned run in 2.0 innings, junior
Jake Roberti gave up one run in 1.0 inning and Hueber (1-0) allowed three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings to earn the win.
The Hawks used six pitchers in the game. Prather allowed one run on one hit in 1.0 inning. Junior Lee Byrd (0-1) surrendered five runs and retired one batter in the third and took the loss.
Trimble went 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Woody was 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBI and one run scored. Hull finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Patriots are on the road to begin a three-game series on Friday against North Carolina A&T with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C.
