FAIRFAX, Va. – Graduate student third baseman
South Trimble plated a pair of runs with a single in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Patriots to a 13-12 walk-off win over Bucknell on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
The Patriots scored three runs in the ninth and improved to 7-1 at home, with each of their last four wins a walk-off victory.
Freshman shortstop
Jake Butler had three hits and scored three runs. Junior first baseman
Reece Woody hit his first home run of the season, drove in three runs and scored twice.
Senior center fielder
Jordan Smith, freshman second baseman
Toby Hueber and Trimble each had two hits and scored two runs in the game. Graduate student designated hitter
Ben Jones, junior catcher
Connor Dykstra, Trimble and Smith each knocked in a pair of runs.
Bucknell (6-9) took the early lead against Mason (8-7) freshman starter
Ty Uchman in the top of the first.
Senior left fielder Jacob Corson led off with a solo home run to right field to put the Bison in front, 1-0.
Junior third baseman Sean Keys singled, senior center fielder Grant Voytovich walked and junior first baseman Tyler Dunn singled to load the bases. Junior second baseman Billy Kender then drove in two runs with a single up the middle to make it 3-0.
The Patriots responded in the bottom of the inning against Bucknell sophomore starter Mikey Myro.
Trimble walked and stole second and Smith followed with a walk. Both baserunners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Jones then drove in a run with a ground out and with two outs, Dykstra plated another with a single to left to cut the lead to 3-2.
With one out in the bottom of the second, Hueber singled to third base, went to second on a throwing error and moved to third on a wild pitch. Senior left fielder
Derek Wood then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, with Hueber coasting home to tie the score, 3-3.
Trimble kept the inning going with a single up the middle and Smith belted his third home run of the season, a two-run blast over the left field fence to vault the Patriots into the lead, 5-3.
The teams traded runs in the third inning. Dunn led off with a single and advanced all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Kender then sent a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a one-run game at 5-4.
In the home half of the inning, sophomore right fielder
James Quinn-Irons led off with a double to left and scrambled to third on a wild pitch. Dykstra followed with a sacrifice fly to center to increase the Mason lead to 6-4.
After two scoreless frames, the Bison made it a one-run game at 6-5 in the top of the sixth. Freshman shortstop Andrew Swenson began the inning with a triple to left and scored on a sacrifice fly in foul ground in left.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Patriots scored three runs on three hits to extend the advantage to 9-5.
Bulter started the inning with a single and Woody stepped to the plate and smashed a two-run home run, his first of the season, over the right-center field fence. Hueber then doubled to right field and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. Trimble put runners on the corners with a walk and Jones plated a run with a ground out.
In the top of the seventh, Bucknell sent eight batters to the plate and scored five runs on four hits to take a 10-9 lead over Mason.
The Bison loaded the bases with three singles. With one out, it looked like the Patriots had turned an inning-ending double play. It was ruled that Bison freshman center fielder Billy Fluharty was hit by a pitch and the inning continued. Swenson then hit a grand slam to left field.
The Patriots got a run back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Butler singled and went all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Woody tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field.
In the top of the eighth, the Bison loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a double. With one out, a walk forced in a run and a sacrifice fly plated another to vault Bucknell into the lead, 12-10.
In the bottom of the ninth, Bulter and Woody each drew a walk and Hueber was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Wood knocked in a run with a fielder's choice ground out and Trimble stepped in and delivered with a line drive single down the left field line to drive in the tying and winning runs.
The Patriots used seven pitchers in the game. Uchman allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits in 3.1 innings in his first collegiate start. Junior
Britt Yount (2-0) tossed 1.1 hitless innings to earn the win.
The Bison used four pitchers in the game. Myro allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits in 3.0 innings. Junior Nick Mulvey (1-1) gave up three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings and took the loss.
Every player in the lineup for the Patriots reached base at least once. Seven different Patriots scored at least one run and seven different players drove in at least two runs for Mason.
Butler went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Woody was 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and scored two runs. Trimble reached base all six of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with four walks, two RBI and two runs scored.
Smith finished 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Jones, Dykstra and Wood each drove in a pair of runs.
The Patriots wrap up their season-high eight-game homestand when they host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
