Patriots and Wildcats Claw It Out Saturday in North Carolina

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University men's basketball team (15-8, 4-6) hits the road for a Saturday afternoon contest at Davidson (13-9, 3-6).

Tip-off between the Patriots and Wildcats is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday's game will be broadcast nationally on USA Network featuring commentary from Steve Schlanger and Dr. John Giannini. In addition, Voice of the Patriots Bill Rohland will call the game on the GoMason Digital Network, with streaming coverage beginning at 2:15 p.m.

PATRIOT POINTS
• The Patriots check in at 94th in Friday's NET rankings. That's the highest Mason has been at this point of the season in program history. The team also is No. 101 in the KenPom rankings.

• After starting the season 13-2, Mason has dropped six of eight. Five of those losses have been by seven points or less. The Patriots have fell in their last three contests by an average of 2.7 points.

• Most recently, Mason led 44-36 at the break Wednesday, but Loyola Chicago held a +14 (49-35) edge in the second half during an 85-79 triumph for the Ramblers in Fairfax.

• The Patriots shot 59.5 percent from the floor against the Ramblers. But Mason also committed 17 turnovers which led to a +13 (19-6) edge for Loyola in points off turnovers.

• After not allowing its opponent to shoot 50+ percent from the floor over the first 19 games of the season, Patriot foes have now shot 50 percent or better in three of the past four contests.

• Sophomore Keyshawn Hall led Mason with team highs in points (20) and rebounds (8) vs. the Ramblers. He made a career-best 10 free throws on 11 attempts. Hall is averaging 21.5 points over the Patriots' past four games and is fourth in the league in scoring (18.9 ppg) in conference play.

• Senior Darius Maddox notched 18 points vs. the Minutemen. He's averaging 17.8 points and shooting 50 percent from the floor (.520 3pt FG) over Mason's past four contests.

• Graduate forward Amari Kelly (12 pts, 7 reb) and freshman guard Baraka Okojie (15 pts, 2 ast, 2 stl, 10-14 FT) also reached double figures against Loyola Chicago.

• Okojie is averaging 11.5 points, 3.3 assists, 2.7 steals and 27.3 minutes and is shooting 54.8 percent over Mason's past six games. He ranks second in the A-10 in steals in league play (2.1) and is sixth amongst all Div. I freshmen in free throw attempts (105).

• Mason ranks 15th nationally in 2pt FG defense (.446) and 29th in overall FG defense (.403). Over the last four games, however, opponents have shot 54.1 percent from inside the arc and 47.9 percent overall against the Patriots.

• Hall leads the A-10 in defensive rebounds/game (7.6), rebounds/game (8.7) and double-doubles (8).

• The Patriots rank third in the A-10 and 54th nationally in free throw percentage (.749). That number improves to 77.1 percent in league games, during which Mason gets 22.1 percent of its points at the line (2nd-most in A-10).

• Maddox averages 14.6 points/game on the road this season while shooting 45.5 percent (20-44) from 3pt range.

HISTORY vs. DAVIDSON
Saturday's matchup marks the 12th all-time meeting between Mason and Davidson. The Wildcats hold an 8-3 advantage in the series, including a 4-1 edge inside Belk Arena. In the most recent matchup, the Patriots edged the Wildcats 67-65 in Fairfax last season on January 14, 2023. Then-junior Malik Henry posted 12 points (5-7 FG), six rebounds and two steals in the win.

A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS (13-9, 3-6 A-10; NET #116, KenPom #118)
Davidson was picked 12th in the A-10 Preseason Poll. The Wildcats feature a top-100 KenPom defense (1.022 points/possession allowed, 94th nationally) and only allow an offensive rebound on 25.9 percent of defensive possessions (57th nationally). Davidson posted a 10-3 non-conference mark, highlighted by top-100 wins over Maryland (64-61) and Charlotte (85-81). Grant Huffman leads the team in scoring (14.1 ppg), grabs 5.2 rebounds/contest and ranks second in the A-10 in assists/game (5.0). David Skogman adds 13.3 points and 4.9 rebounds/contest, while Conner Kochera (11.0 ppg) and Bailey Reed (10.9 ppg) also average double figures.

UP NEXT
George Mason returns home for two-straight in Fairfax. First up is a rivalry game against George Washington on Tuesday (Feb. 13). Tip-off between the Patriots and Revolutionaries is set for 7 p.m. The game will be televised on MASN and streamed on ESPN+.
