FAIRFAX– George Mason had seven wrestlers finish on the podium at the annual A Better Way Athletics Open held at the Field House on campus.
Logan Messer won all five matches en route to winning the 174-pound weight class. The senior had three technical falls and a major decision.
Two wrestlers
Kaden Cassidy and
Evan Maag finished as runners-up with 4-1 performances. Cassidy secured a technical fall then won three straight decisions to make the finals. He had a big win over a 2x NCAA Qualifier.
Maag finished second after three pins and a technical fall. In the finals, he was up by 11 points on the #5 wrestler in the country, late in the third period and got pinned in a crazy scramble.
Malachi DuVall finished fourth at 184 pounds. He won by technical fall twice before dropping a highly contested match to a top five wrestler in the country. In his third-place match, he was forced to default after an injury early in the match.
JB Dragovich and
Thomas Stofka posted a 5-1 record at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively. Both made the podium but to a match limit rule, neither were able to compete in the 5th place bout.
James Blackman posted a 4-2 record and finished in 6th place at 285 pounds.
Up Next: The Patriots have a break for finals before returning to the mat to host Gardner-Webb on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7 pm.
