DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Patriots women's volleyball team fell to the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday evening, 2-3. After a strong start in winning the first two sets, the Patriots were unable to hold off the Wildcats, eventually losing the last three sets: 25-22, 27-25, 25-27, 24-26, 11-15.
The first set was a hard-fought battle. There were ten ties and five lead changes in the set. The Patriots maintained control for most of the game, and when Davidson made a run towards the end of the set to take the lead, 20-22, the Green & Gold responded with five straight points off the service of graduate student
Nani Spaar to finish the set, 25-22.
Davidson was the team to start off set two, opening with a 5-2 run. The Patriots tied the game at 10-10, and then matched two long runs but the Wildcats to tie the game again at 19-19. The teams went back and forth until consecutive kills from seniors Camile Larkin and
Olyvia Kennedy finally finished the set, victorious for the Patriots.
Set three seemed to be the final blow for the Wildcats, as the Patriots opened the set on a 6-2 run. They led almost the entire set, but when tied 25-25, it was the Wildcats this time to finish the set off back-to-back kills.
Still in the lead, George Mason started set four on a good foot with a 12-6 start. Davidson fought back to tie the game at 14-14, and then, the teams exchanged points until it was 24-24. Once again, it was Davidson who was able to string together the final two points and win the set.
Going into the final set, the Patriots still seemed in control. Both teams stayed close, and at 10-7, the momentum favored George Mason. From that point on, however, it was the Wildcats who controlled the game, finishing the set and the match on an 8-1 run.
