FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason women's volleyball team beat the Rhode Island Rams on Alumni Day, 3-1. A day of celebration started with the Patriots' hard-fought win: 25-19, 21-25, 28-26, 25-16.
The Patriots started the match strong with a fairly dominant set one performance. Senior
Olyvia Kennedy scored back-to-back service aces on her first two services of the game – a confidence that the team embraced for the remainder of the set, winning 25-19.
Set two was a bit of a stumble for George Mason. Both teams exchanged points for a while before Rhode Island took a four-point lead. The Patriots began to mount a comeback but ran out of time as the Rams took the set, 25-21.
Between sets two and three, 25 alumni were recognized in an on-court celebration. Spanning all 50 years of George Mason women's volleyball, the alumni were welcomed home to Fairfax and celebrated at a post-game reception.
The Patriots retook control in set three, starting with a 6-1 run. The Green & Gold maintained that lead for most of the set until the Rams went on a run late in the set to tie the game and go ahead. Several lead changes later, it was back-to-back kills from Kennedy and an error from the Rams that finally secured the set for the Patriots.
Set four started a little rocky for George Mason. The Rams built as much as a five-point lead before the Patriots regained their footing. It was a five-point run off the service of Kennedy where the Patriots finally retook the lead. A stellar six-point run a short time later off the service of senior
Ewelina Gacek put the Patriots up nine. A tricky skip-set kill from sophomore
Camryn Weldon finished the set, and secured the win for the Patriots, 3-1.
