FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women's volleyball team opened Alumni Weekend strong with three-set sweep of the Rhode Island Rams. Though the Rams tried to keep even with the Patriots, the Green & Gold put up points when it mattered most: 25-21, 25-22, 25-20.
All three sets were very similar games: each team went on runs, keeping the game close, but the Patriots prevailed in the end.
In set one, it was four serves from senior
Ewelina Gacek and a kill from junior
Haley Graetz that stopped a late-game run from the Rams, securing the win for the Patriots.
In set two, the Patriots couldn't shake the Rams. George Mason would go on a run and be up a few points, and then Rhode Island would go on a run and tie the game. It went like this back and forth until the game was tied at 22-22. Thanks to a few errors from the Rams and a kill senior
Olyvia Kennedy, the Patriots ended set two victorious.
Set three looked like it would also be back and forth until sophomore
Autumn Martinez-Robinson stepped up to serve. Six straight points, including three service aces, the Patriots secured a cushion that they maintained throughout the rest of the game, ultimately winning 25-20.
