FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University men's basketball freshman guard
Baraka Okojie has been named A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
It marks the first time in his career Okojie has earned the weekly accolade. He shares the award with La Salle's Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi.
Okojie tallied a career-best 18 points, made 5-of-6 field goal attempts and dished out two assists in George Mason's 92-84 win against Rhode Island Saturday. The Brampton, Ontario product also went 8-of-10 from the free throw line and was a game-best +15 (+/-) when on the floor.
With Mason ahead 63-62 midway through the second half, Okojie either got a big rebound or a steal on three consecutive possessions. He burst up the floor on each and scored on one possession, then assisted on the next two. It was part of a 7-0 spurt that changed the dynamic of the game and gave the Patriots a 70-62 edge with 8:14 left.
Okojie has been playing outstanding basketball of late, while averaging 11.7 points, 2.7 assists, 2.3 steals and 25.6 minutes over the past three contests. He's shooting 56.3 percent from the floor during that stretch.
On the season, he ranks t-8
th amongst freshmen nationally in free throw attempts (84) and is 10
th in free throws made.
Okojie and the Patriots return to action Wednesday (Jan. 31) at Saint Joseph's. Tip-off between the Patriots and Hawks in Philly is set for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
