Patriots Travel to DC for Rivalry Matchup with GW

FAIRFAX, VA. – The George Mason women's basketball team will take the short trip to the nation's capital on Wednesday for a noon matchup with rival George Washington.
 
George Mason and George Washington will matchup in a classic rivalry game for the 46th time in program history on Wednesday, and for the first of two times this season. The Revolutionaries hold a 30-15 record over Mason, including 18-5 in Atlantic 10 contests. The Georges have split the last four meetings, with both teams winning at home. The last time Mason won in the District came back in 2019.
 
The last time out, Mason downed UMass on the road, 73-52, for its' fourth-straight win and fifth overall Atlantic 10 win. On the other hand, the Revolutionaries fell to Saint Louis, 66-56, at home.
 
PATRIOT POINTS
  • The Patriots earned their highest-ever NET ranking on Jan. 22 after two more Atlantic 10 wins last week, jumping to No. 51
  • Zahirah Walton was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, marking the fifth-straight week and six overall that a Patriot has won the award
  • Walton led the Patriots on both sides of the court with 17.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals and 2.0 assists, while shooting 59.1% from the field and 100% from the free throw line across last week's 2-0 record
  • Sonia Smith leads the team with 15.2 points per game (6th, A-10) and is third in the Atlantic 10 with 17.7 points per game against conference opponents. She also leads the team with 3.1 assists per game (10th, A-10) 
  • The Patriots lead the A-10 with 77.0 points per game (38th nationally), an 18.1-point scoring margin (24th nationally), 42.5 boards per game (24th nationally), a 5.00 turnover margin (28th nationally) and are forcing a league best 19.3 turnovers per game
  • Mason boasts one of the top benches in the country, currently sitting at 2nd nationally with 37.1 bench points per game. Walton leads the way with a team-second-best 11.6 points per game
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
George Washington went 7-5 in nonconference play this season, including three-straight to open and close the non-conference schedule. Similarly, to Mason, GW downed local opponents American and Coppin St. this season. The final common opponent between the two teams is Towson, who the Revs fell 68-60 to. Through six Atlantic 10 contests, GW is 1-5 with a lone win on the road at St. Bonaventure.
 
George Washington is led on offense by reigning A-10 Sixth Woman of the Year Nya Robertson, who leads a trio of double-figure scorers with 16.6 points per game (3rd, A-10). The sophomore guard is the team's top three-point shooter with 40 makes from deep. Nya Lok (11.2) and Essence Brown (10.7) also average 10+ points for the Revolutionaries. 
 
Under the basket, four Revs average over five rebounds per game, led by 5.6 boards (16th, A-10) from Mayowa Taiwo. Taiwo also leads the team with 1.7 steals per game (9th, A-10) and is second with 1.7 assists. Asjah Inniss leads the team with 2.5 assists per game to go with 5.9 points and 4.4 rebounds.
 
As a team, GW ranks fifth in the conference in scoring defense, allowing just 56.6 points per game (39th nationally). The Revolutionaries are also fifth in the A-10 in rebounding, averaging 38.1 boards per game as a team.

The Patriots will return home on Sunday, Jan. 28 for Homecoming and Alumni Day, hosting in-state rival VCU. Tip-off with the Rams is set for 3 p.m. with the game broadcasted on MASN.
