Fairfax, Va. - George Mason traveled to New Jersey to face No.2 Long Beach and extend their two game winning streak. Long Beach had a goal to remain undefeated and The Beach came out victorious to maintain their 100% win record and Mason's record goes down to 2-3.
Game Recap:
The Beach came out firing taking the first set comfortably, 25-14. George Mason kept fighting at the start of the set but could not keep up with opposition. Long Beach had no attacking errors and an impressive .706 hitting percentage.
George Mason came out the second set with determination. Each team took one point leads multiple times and if they were down one point, they instantly tied it back up. Mason achieved a two point lead, 19-17, until The Beach called a timeout to pause Mason's momentum and it worked in their favor, tying the game 19-19 and forcing Jay Hosak to call a timeout. The Patriots got their confidence back and regained a two point lead, 22-20 after Sam Peters delivered a magnificent kill. Another timeout was called but once back in the court, Liam French got a service ace to extend the lead by one more point. Troy McDonald scored the 25th to secure the set and tie the game up. The hitting percentage improved significantly (.375) and the service aces was once again a key factor to win the second set.
The third set began the same way as the second with both teams going back and forth taking a one point lead. Mason changed the momentum and went on a three unanswered point run to take an 8-11 lead. Long Beach took charge and scored three points unanswered as well to tie the game once again at 11-11. The game was fiercely fought and the game was still tied at 21-21 until The Beach decided to end the set scoring 4 points consecutively to take a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set had a strong start for Mason taking a 6-3 lead but Long Beach once again made a comeback to make it 7-6. It seemed as if Long Beach was going to take this set comfortably but Mason gained their momentum back and made it a two point difference late in the game, 18-20. The Beach proved why they are ranked second in the nation and went on to win the fourth set 25-20 and finished off the game 3-1. Senior Clarke Godbold had the most kills in the game with 18 with Aidan Knipe giving out 39 assists.
