Patriots Fall at La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - George Mason freshman defender Kelly Janssen scored his first collegiate goal but the Patriots fell to La Salle, 2-1, on Saturday night at McCarthy Stadium in Philadelphia, Pa.

Mason (1-5-2, 0-3-0 A-10) took the lead early in the match against La Salle (4-3-3, 1-0-2 A-10).  In the third minute, Janssen took advantage of an Explorers giveaway and raced into the left side of the penalty area and blasted a shot past the charging goalkeeper into the lower right corner of the net to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.

The Explorers netted the equalizer in the 16th minute.  Junior forward Sean Yurgel scored his first collegiate goal when he found the back of the net off a corner kick to even the score, 1-1.  Sophomore defender Evan Watt and senior defender Drew Blackwell picked up the assists.

In the 67th minute, Yurgel scored the game-winner when he converted with a header from six yards out off a corner kick to make it a 2-1 game.  Sophomore defender Americo Pereira and Blackwell notched the assists on the play.

Mason graduate student goalkeeper Jaume Salvado (1-5-2, 0-3-0 A-10) made one save while La Salle sophomore goalkeeper Filip Sabatti (4-3-1, 1-0-1 A-10) made two saves in the match.

HOW THEY SCORED

3' | Janssen scored from 14 yards out into the lower right corner.
16' | Yurgel scored from inside the six off a corner kick into the lower right corner.
67' | Yurgel converted with a header from six yards out off a corner kick into the lower left corner.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

The Patriots outshot the Explorers, 11-5, while both clubs recorded three shots on goal.  The Patriots and Explorers each finished with five corner kicks in the match.

Janssen led the team with three shots and scored on his lone shot on goal.  Junior midfielder Zach Golden and sophomore midfielder Erick Kilosho each registered two shots and one shot on goal.

NEXT

The Patriots return home to face Rhode Island on Wednesday, Oct. 4, with the opening kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
