SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The George Mason women's volleyball team registered its' first sweep of the season on Saturday, downing Saint Peter's 25-13, 25-20, 25-18.
The graduate student pair of
Nani Spaar and
Gracie Halley once again shined for the Patriots (2-4) and were rewarded with All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the Seton Hall Classic. Spaar averaged 4.2 kills per set and registered double-digit kills in all three matches. Defensively, Halley averaged 5.0 digs per set and set a season-high of 28 against NJIT on Friday.
Set one started as a back-and-forth battle featuring six ties, until the Patriots began to pull ahead beginning with a Saint Peter's service error and Mason rattled off six-straight points to take a 18-11 lead. Three of those points came from three
Camille Larkin service aces. The Peacocks (0-5) would score two more points, but another 6-0 run featuring three kills from
Olyvia Kennedy propelled Mason to the set one victory.
Saint Peter's jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in set two, but the Patriots slowly climbed back into the set. Down 11-10, the Patriots scored four-straight points with kills from three different players to take the lead for good.
Nani Spaar's offense exploded down the stretch as she tallied eight of her kills in set two to push the Patriots to the 25-20 win.
Mason once again found themselves down in set two, this time 6-2, but
Megan Shifflett Bachmann's squad stayed the course. A kill and a block from Larkin gave the Patriots an 11-9 lead that they would hold onto for the remainder of the set. An impressive 6-0 run by the Patriots gave them some breathing room, and Kennedy converted her ninth kill of the day to close the match and secure the sweep.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Ewelina Gacek was the second Patriot in double-figures, posting 10 kills at a .400 clip to go with three digs and two block assists
- Freshman Chelsea Colter shined at the net once again, leading the Patriots with three blocks
- The Patriots hit at an overall clip of .273 while limiting the Peacocks to just .054. Nine Patriots registered at least one kill
- Grace Kristofic paced the offense with 17 assists to five digs and a service ace

The Patriots return home to Fairfax to host the Mason Invite with matches against Brown, Robert Morris and Radford next weekend on Sept. 8-9.
