Three Mason Golfers Named GCAA All-America Scholars

NORMAN, Okla. — George Mason University men's golfers Nikita GubenkoMilan Matneja, and Colin Slater have been named 2022-23 GCAA All-America Scholars for NCAA Division I.
 
A graduate student, Matneja earned a GPA of 4.00 while pursuing a master's degree in public health with a concentration in epidemiology. The Provost Scholar was also named to the 2023 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf All-Academic Team this past spring.
 
The Fairfax native played his best collegiate golf down the stretch with three top 40 finishes, while boasting a 73.8 stroke average in the final three tournaments. Matneja lead the Patriots with a career-best 11th place finish at an Atlantic 10 Championship.
 
Gubenko, a finance major, is a Dean's List honoree.
 
The Great Falls, native played in seven tournaments for the Patriots this season. He had the third-best stroke average on the team, 75.20 (3.5 vs. par).

Slater played in 10 tournaments this season with a 75.70 stroke average.  The Austin, Texas native finished t-24 at the Atlantic 10 Championships, t-24. Academically, he earned Dean's List and A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll recognition.
 
All three players helped the Patriots to an overall 3.43 team GPA, the highest among the men's teams at Mason.
 
To be eligible for GCAA All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically in NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their associate degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, they must participate in 50% of their team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 in NCAA Division I, under 78.0 in NCAA Division II, under 79.0 in NCAA Division III, under 78.0 in NAIA, and under 77.0 in NJCAA and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at their college or university.
 
546 NCAA Division I athletes from 193 schools earned 2022-23 GCAA All-America Scholar honors.
