FAIRFAX, Va. – Freshman starter Logan Rumberg tossed three scoreless innings to win his second straight start and junior Kyle Menaker notched his first save in a Mason uniform to help the Patriots down Navy, 4-1, on Wednesday at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

Mason (22-21, 7-7 A10) took the lead against Navy (22-24, 14-11 Patriot League) sophomore starter Evan Hamill in the top of the second inning.

Junior designated hitter Mark Trotta led off with a double to right-center and freshman catcher Bennett Shealor reached on a fielding error by the left fielder to put runners on second and third.  Senior second baseman Brett Stallings then walked to load the bases.

With one out, junior right fielder Derek Wood lifted a sacrifice fly to center field with Trotta coasting home to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.

Rumberg allowed just one hit through three innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.  Sophomore Britt Yount followed with two innings of one-hit ball.

In the top of the fifth, the Patriots dented the scoreboard against Midshipmen freshman Jackson Beattie.  Mason freshman left fielder James Quinn-Irons led off with a single through the left side to start the inning.  After a foul out and a fly out, Trotta singled through the right side and Quinn-Irons scored when Trotta was caught in a run-down to make it a 2-0 game.

The Midshipmen scored their lone run of the game against Patriots freshman Tyler Herkey in the bottom of the seventh.

Senior first baseman Alex Smith led off with a single and senior designated hitter Kyle Rausch was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.  With one out and runners on the corners, Midshipmen senior right fielder Colin Smith grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in a run to make it a one-run game at 2-1.

In the top of the eighth, the Patriots added a pair of runs against Navy freshman Aiden Chamberlin and sophomore Landon Kruer.

Junior center fielder Jordan Smith led off with a single and stole second before Trotta was hit by a pitch.  Both players moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and Smith then scored from third on a second wild pitch by Kruer to extend the lead to 3-1.  Stallings collected his 29th RBI of the season with a single down the first base line to make it 4-1.

Graduate student Nolan Lamere, freshman Michael Salina and Menaker each pitched one scoreless inning.

For the Patriots, Rumberg (3-0) allowed one hit in 3.0 innings to earn the win.  Menaker pitched the ninth to notch his first Mason save.  The Patriots allowed just four singles and seven baserunners in the game.

For the Midshipmen, Hamill (0-3) allowed one unearned run in 3.0 innings and took the loss.  Beattie gave up one run on five hits in 4.0 innings.  Chamberlin surrendered two runs on one hit and didn't retire a batter in his outing.

Trotta went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Stallings and Wood each finished 2-for-3 and drove in a run.

The Patriots begin a three-game series against Fordham on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Houlihan Park in Bronx, N.Y.
