FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University men's basketball head coach Tony Skinn announced Sunday that former Oklahoma State standout Woody Newton will join the Patriot roster beginning in 2023-24.
A 6-foot-9-inch guard/forward, Newton played two seasons for the Cowboys (2021-23) after beginning his career at Syracuse University in 2020-21.
"I've always been a fan of Woody's game," Skinn said. "With his versatility and his size, he can do a little bit of everything. He can shoot it, handle it and defend. That can make him a very good player at our level. His length and wingspan will really help us on both sides of the floor and I think his ceiling is still untapped."
Despite battling adversity during his junior season, Newton still averaged career bests in scoring (4.3 ppg), rebounding (3.4 rpg) and minutes (17.0 mpg). He started 13 of 29 games for the Cowboys, who won 20 games and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NIT.
Overall, Newton has seen action in 57 contests over three seasons and tallied 198 career points. As a freshman at Syracuse, he shot a career-best 38.9 percent from 3pt range and 46.4 percent overall.
A native of District Heights, Md., Newton attended Mt. Zion Prep in Lanham for two seasons, where he helped lead the Warriors to the 2019 National Prep School quarterfinals. Prior to his time at Mt. Zion, Newton starred at McKinley Tech, where he was named an All-DC First Team selection by DMVelite.com. He averaged 17.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game with the Trainers in 2017-18.
