KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Mason golf team played through blustery conditions Sunday to finish eighth at the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship.
Sixth through eighth places were separated by just three strokes. Rhode Island placed sixth with a 904, followed by Dayton in seventh with a 906 and Mason one stroke back at 907.
Milan Matneja lead the Patriots with an 11th place finish, the grad student's best finish at an Atlantic 10 Championship. He carded a four-over-par 220 (72-73-75).
Junior
Colin Slater finished in the top 25 with a three-round 227 (71-76-80).
Davidson captured its third straight Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, finishing with a one-over 865 at Reunion Resort's Nicklaus Course.
The Wildcats were led by medalist and A-10 Golfer of the Year Alex Heffner, who was 10-under, and earn the league's automatic bid to NCAA Regionals. Davidson coach Tim Straub was named A-10 Coach of the Year.
Loyola Chicago finished second with an 873, followed by VCU in third at 881 and George Washington in fourth at 887. Richmond rounded out the top five with a three-day total of 889.
Heffner won by four strokes over LUC's Timmy Crawford, shooting a 206 (69-67-70). Crawford carded a 210 (73-68-69) to lead the Ramblers. VCU freshman Ugo Malcor, who was named the Rookie of the Year and was the Tournament's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer, shot a 215 (71-69-75) to place third overall. Davidson's Will Davis (68-74-74) and Charlie Kulwin of Loyola tied for fourth with a 216.
The All-Conference Team, which was also announced Sunday, included Heffner, Crawford, Davis and Malcor, as well as Dayton's Henry May, Jakub Hrinda of George Washington, Rhode Island's Brandon Gillis and Bryson Richards, Richmond's Cole Ekert and Mattias Varjun from VCU.
