ORLANDO, Fla. – The George Mason University men's tennis team was just one break away from knocking off fourth-seeded Davidson in Thursday's A-10 Quarterfinals in a tough 4-3 setback to the Wildcats at the USTA National Campus.
The match came down to No. 6 singles, where
Hayden Postin and Davidson's Jerry Wang were knotted up at one set all. Postin won the first, 6-3, but Wang fought back to win the second, 6-4. Wang was able to claim the third at 6-4 to clinch the match for Davidson.
Mason struck early by claiming the doubles point. The freshman duo of
Monil Lotlikar and
Alvaro Pedraza got things started with a 6-2 win over Jerry Wang and Luca Lovrich at No. 3. That win improved the pair to an impressive 4-1 as dual doubles teammates this season.
Mason then clinched the doubles point after graduate student
Rishab Sardana and sophomore
Niza Simunyola took care of business with a 6-4 triumph over Alejandro Solares and Nico Pinzon. They finished the season with an excellent 9-4 record together in dual doubles.
Davidson won the first three decisions at No. 4, No. 1 and No. 2 singles to build a 3-1 advantage.
Mason fought back after a win from Lotlikar at No. 3. He won his first set, 6-1, then dominated in a second-set tiebreaker (7-1) to win the first A-10 Championship match of his career. He finished his inaugural campaign with a stellar 7-2 mark at No. 3 singles.
Sophomore
Niza Simunyola evened the score at 3-3 with a marathon win at No. 5. He swept the first set, 6-0, then headed to a second-set tiebreak. That one went extra points, but Simunyola gritted out a 10-8 win. He finished his season an impressive 21-7 overall in singles and 10-4 in dual action.
Rishab Sardana wrapped up his outstanding Mason career Thursday and put together crucial contributions throughout the campaign. Overall, he won 10 dual doubles matches and eight dual singles contests on the year.
