Logan Rumberg earned the win in his first collegiate start and graduate student reliever
Kyle Smith picked up his first save in a Mason uniform in the Patriots 3-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Mason (20-20, 6-6 Atlantic 10) took the lead against Mount St. Mary's (20-19, 6-6 MAAC) junior starter Cam King in the bottom of the second.
Sophomore catcher
Connor Dykstra led off with a single to center, freshman left fielder
James Quinn-Irons beat out an infield single and sophomore first baseman
Reece Woody bunted his way on to load the bases.
Graduate student designated hitter
Ryan Archibald drove in the first run of the game with a fielder's choice ground out to put the Patriots in front, 1-0.
Freshman second baseman
Evan Blanchard then plated a run with a sacrifice bunt, with Quinn-Irons crossing the plate to make the score 2-0.
The Mountaineers scored their lone run of the afternoon in the top of the third on a bunt single by junior shortstop Tyler Long to make it a one-run game at 2-1.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots added an insurance run against Mountaineers freshman reliever Jeff Davis.
With one out, junior right fielder
Derek Wood doubled down the left field line and junior center fielder
Jordan Smith followed with a double to right-center to increase the lead to 3-1.
The Patriots used seven pitchers in the game and the six relievers recorded six scoreless innings from the fourth through the ninth, with
Kyle Smith striking out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
For the Patriots, Rumberg (2-0) allowed one run on three hits and struck out four with one walk in 3.0 innings to earn the win.
Kyle Smith picked up his first save as a Patriot.
For the Mountaineers, King (0-2) allowed two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings and took the loss. Freshman Jeff Slepak, senior Luke Pryor and Davis each pitched 1.0 inning.
Quinn-Irons went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while
Jordan Smith, Archibald and Blanchard each drove in a run for the Patriots.
The Patriots return to Atlantic 10 play with a three-game series against Richmond beginning Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
