Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason golf team will play in the 46th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate, hosted by Penn State, April 15-16.
The 12-team field will play a two-day tournament featuring three rounds at the par 71, 7,171 Penn State Blue Course.
The Rutherford Intercollegiate, established in 1975 as the Penn State Invitational, was named in honor of R.B. "Pop" Rutherford, Sr., known as the "father of Penn State golf." Rutherford, Sr., was the program's coach from the team's inception in 1922 until 1949. Penn State has won or shared the team championship 27 times with the individual championship won by a Nittany Lion 20 times.
The Patriots have participated in the annual tournament 15 times. Mason's best finish is fifth place overall during the 2002-03 season.
In last year's tournament, the Patriots finished ninth in the 14-team field.
Mason Head Coach
Greg Pieczynski played golf collegiately for the host Nittany Lions, where he was a captain, two-time Academic All-American. He was crowned the individual champion in the 2004 Rutherford Intercollegiate with a three-round 208 (-5).
