FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team defeated Longwood, 13-6, its midweek matchup on Wednesday at Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville, Va.

Senior third baseman South Trimble hit a grand slam and reached base three times, while junior center fielder Jordan Smith also homered and reached base four times in the game.

Every player in the starting lineup either drove in a run or scored a run for the Patriots.

Mason (12-12) took the lead in the top of the second inning against Longwood (9-19) graduate student starter Cole Taylor.

With two outs, junior right fielder Derek Wood, sophomore left fielder Alex Knapp and sophomore shortstop Carsen Pracht each walked to load the bases.  Trimble came to the plate and hit a grand slam to put the Patriots in front, 4-0.

Longwood responded in the home half of the second against Mason junior starter Nick Martins.

After two singles to start the frame, Lancers junior second baseman Hayden Harris plated a run with a double to center.  The Lancers then scored two runs on a pair of ground outs to make it a one-run game at 4-3.

The Patriots batted around in the top of the third to retake the lead against Taylor and sophomore reliever Aidan VanVickle.

Smith led off with a solo home run, his second round-tripper of the season, to increase the lead to 5-3.

Sophomore designated hitter Connor Dykstra and sophomore first baseman Reece Woody each walked.  With one out, Wood singled and Dykstra scored on a throwing error to make it 6-3.  Knapp then drove in a run with a single to extend the advantage to 7-3.

Longwood scored a single run in the third on a RBI-single by junior designated hitter James Nelson and another in the fourth on a solo home run by Harris to trim the Mason lead to 7-5.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Patriots graduate student Mason Posey entered the game and recorded the final out to end the Lancers threat.

After the teams went scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, the Patriots scored six runs over the final two frames.

In the eighth, senior second baseman Brett Stallings reached on an error to start the inning.  With out one, Dykstra beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners and then Woody walked to load the bases against Longwood junior Loy Hickmon.

Freshman catcher Bennett Shealor delivered a two-run double down the left field line and Woody knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to pad the lead to 10-5.

In the ninth, the Patriots batted around for the second time in the game and scored three runs on one hit, three walks and a hit batter against Lancers junior Michael Dolberry.

Trimble walked and stole second and Stallings reached on an error for the second straight inning, with Trimble racing around to score to make it 11-5.  Smith was hit by a pitch and Dykstra walked to load the bases with one out.  Woody came through with a single to center, with both Smith and Stallings crossing the plate for a 13-5 Mason lead.

The Lancers scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth for the 13-6 final score.

For the Patriots, Martins allowed four runs on six hits in 3.0 innings.  Freshman Connor Knox gave up one run on one hit and retired two batters in the fourth.  Posey (1-1) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win.
