FAIRFAX, Va. – The Patriots were defeated in a five-set thriller to the #9 Loyola Chicago Ramblers this afternoon in EagleBank Arena.
The Patriots pushed the Ramblers to the brink throughout the game and until the very end. The sets ended 23-25, 25-18, 21-25, 29-27 and 15-17.
Mason started off in control of the first, leading by four at 11-7. The Ramblers would go on a run of their own and tie it at 15.
Omar Hoyos smashed a kill to take the lead back but the Ramblers just wouldn't go away. The score was tied at 20 when the Ramblers took four out of the next five points to steal the set 25-23.
The Patriots had a slow start in the second but roared back. After trailing 11-8, Mason went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead by three. The Patriots remained in control and snatched six out of the last seven to win the set 25-18.
Jack Bolz had five kills and
Sam Peters notched three total blocks.
The Ramblers took control early on in the third (11-8) and kept it for the majority of the set. They led by five at 19-14 when the Patriots scored four straight and brought it within one (two kills by
Liam French and two attacking errors from the Ramblers). Loyola maintained the lead and won 25-21.
The fourth set came down to wire. The Patriots looked to have the set all rapped up at 22-19, but the Ramblers scored four straight. Mason fought off four match points before a solo block by
Sam Peters and kill by
Georgi Zahariev sealed the set at 29-27.
Chey Cooper was subbed in to start the fourth and immediately made a difference tallying three kills, five receptions and two digs.
The fifth and final set was close as well, going beyond the 15-point mark. The Patriots took a 2-0 lead and then the score went back and forth until a service error by the Ramblers and a
Jack Bolz ace stretched the lead to two again (10-8). The Ramblers stole five straight (13-10), but the Patriots tied it at 14. Loyola would take three out of the last four and win it 17-15.

- Loyola notched six more blocks than the Patriots (13-7)
- Hoyos had 19 kills and Bolz had 17
- Zahariev totaled 45 set assists
