GREENVILLE, N.C. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the middle game of its series to No. 10 East Carolina, 8-1, on Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville, N.C.
Mason (11-11) fell behind ECU (18-5) in the first inning when Pirates sophomore catcher Ryan McCrystal hit a solo home run off Patriots sophomore starter
Chad Gartland.
The Patriots evened the score in the top of the second against Pirates senior starter Carter Spivey.
With one out, junior center fielder
Jordan Smith singled to right and stole second. Sophomore first baseman
Reece Woody followed with a single to left and sophomore catcher
Connor Dykstra delivered with a single to left, with Smith scoring from second to make it a 1-1 game.
ECU scored the final seven runs of the game.
In the home half of the fifth, junior third baseman Alec Makarewicz hit a solo home run over the right field fence to put the Pirates back in front, 2-1.
The Pirates added two runs on three walks and two hit batters in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 4-1.
ECU plated two runs in the seventh on a RBI-double and RBI-single and scored two more in the eighth on a RBI-single and a ground out for the 8-1 final score.
For the Patriots, Gartland (2-1) allowed four runs on four hits in 5.1 innings and took the loss. Freshman
Owen Stewart faced two batters in the sixth. Freshman
Tyler Herkey gave up two runs on three hits in 1.0 inning.
Graduate student
Mason Posey allowed two hits and retired two batters in the seventh. Freshman
Ryan Edmonds allowed two runs on one hit in the seventh. Sophomore
Britt Yount entered in the ninth and recorded the final three outs.
For the Pirates, Spivey (2-1) allowed one run on five hits in 5.0 innings and earned the win. Sophomore Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman (3.0) and junior Landon Ginn (1.0) combined to allow just one hit over four scoreless innings.
Mason freshman left fielder
James Quinn-Irons went 2-for-3, Woody finished 2-for-4 and Dykstra drove in the lone run of the game for the Patriots.
The Patriots and Pirates wrap up the series on Sunday morning with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
