The Patriots are coming off an impressive weekend, pushing the #14 Charleston Golden Eagles (now ranked #15) to the brink in a 3-2 loss on Friday, and then sweeping them 3-0 on Saturday. This captured Mason's first conference win and handed the Golden Eagles their first loss of the season.
Paul Wyszynski was named the EIVA defensive player of the week for recording a total of 21 digs, four set assists and 42 receptions (without any errors) in last weekend's two matches.
Omar Hoyos tallied a career-high in kills in Friday night's match with 24, and had a total of 36 kills, 10 digs, three block assists, one ace and one set in both games.
The Patriots will look to continue their run, as they have won three out of their last five games.
Hoyos leads the team in kills with 134 (3.19 per set) and is followed by
Jack Bolz (129/2.93).
Georgi Zahariev continues to be the primary setter for the Patriots (363 set assists/8.44), although
Troy McDonald has filled in a few times (33/3.30). On the defensive side, freshman
Paul Wyszynski leads the team in digs with 85 (1.93), and Zahariev comes next (63/1.47).
Scouting North Greenville (10-4, CC 5-2)
The Crusaders are coached by Matthew McManaway, a 2019 graduate of North Greenville.
Michael de la Cruz has tallied 155 kills (2.92) with Diego Rosich following (128/2.42). Jorge Riesgo sets for the Crusaders and notches 10.48 set assists per match which is the second most in the nation (474 total). Jackson Chadwell and Diego Rosich lead the team in digs (107/2.02 and 106/2.00).
This is the Patriots second game against the Crusaders and the first they won last year 3-1.
Scouting Barton (3-10, CC 3-4)
J.T. Deppe is coaching the Bulldogs in his first season. He was a 2021 graduate of King University (Tenn.) and played for them from 2018-22.
Brandon Johnson has posted the most kills for the Bulldogs with 150 (3.06) and Thomas Fanic is second (101/2.15). Their primary setter is Seth Deppe with 269 set assists (5.85), but Moses Kresch has also played the position (164/3.35). Johnson leads the team in digs as well with 94 (1.92) and Deppe is next (70/1.52).
Mason is 6-0 against Barton and defeated them last year 3-0.
